It seems that making Magic Mike had an oddly profound affect on many of the actors involved, making them fascinated by the world of male strippers. That certainly seems true of Joe Manganiello, who’s now turned director for the first time, making a documentary called La Bare, about a well known male strip club in Dallas, Texas.
Manganiello has been in Utah to premiere the movie at Slamdance, which is the more edgy little unofficial little brother of Sundance. While there he told EW, “I had zero interest in male stripping prior to Magic Mike. As a straight male, I had a lot of misperceptions about the industry. People would walk out of Magic Mike saying ’I loved it but I wish there was more of the guys. I wish I knew more about them, where they live, who they go out with, what their lives are like.’ So I knew there was a lot left on the table.”
As a result he started putting together La Bare alongside his brother Nick. Using his own money, Joe was initially thinking of it being a reality series, but with Steven Soderbergh’s encouragement it’s become a feature-length documentary – and Manganiello’s directorial debut – which US audiences will get to see this summer.
You can take a look at a chat with Manganiello above about the movie above, while the trailer is available over at EW.
