Lucasfilm managed to keep the movie Strange Magic very quiet. It’s from a story by George Lucas, inspired by A Midsummer Night’s Dream, and has been in the works for a long time. However nobody outside the production had heard much about it until some images were released last month, along with the surprise news that it was complete and would be out in the US at the end of January.
Now we’ve got a trailer, which shows that this isn’t just an animated movie, it’s also a Jukebox musical full of tunes from the last six decades.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘“Strange Magic” is a madcap fairy tale musical inspired by “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” Popular songs from the past six decades help tell the tale of a colorful cast of goblins, elves, fairies and imps, and their hilarious misadventures sparked by the battle over a powerful potion. Lucasfilm Animation Singapore and Industrial Light & Magic, which created the CGI animation for 2011’s Academy Award®-winning film “Rango,” bring to life the fanciful forest turned upside down with world-class animation and visual effects.’
It’s due out January 23rd, 2015 in the US, but no UK date is currently set.
