StoryCorps is a great idea. It’s ‘an independent nonprofit whose mission is to provide Americans of all backgrounds and beliefs with the opportunity to record, share, and preserve the stories of our lives’.
That involves going round the country and record people’s tales and then making them into animated shorts. One of those is the wonderful The Saint Of Dry Creek, where Patrick Haggerty remembers a time back in 1959 when his father gave him some unexpected advice concerning his sexuality. You can take a look at the animated short it inspired below.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘Patrick Haggerty grew up the son of a dairy farmer in rural Dry Creek, Washington, during the 1950s. As a teenager, Pat began to understand he was gay—something he thought he was hiding well. But one day, after performing at a school assembly, Pat learned that his father could see him much more clearly than he realized.’
