Until the British decided that fear and racism (while pretending it isn’t racism) surrounding immigration were the way things should go and decided the UK should exit the EU (sorry, but you cannot believe how annoyed and disappointed in my fellow Brits I am), it’s felt that gradually the Western world was moving in the right direction. That’s certainly true of marriage equality in the US, something that only 12 months before it happened, even many liberal people though was years away.
The documentary The Freedom To Marry takes a look at that fight, looking at some of the people who may not have been constantly in front of the cameras but were in the thick of the key moments. Of course, it also can’t ignore the larger grass roots efforts who helped ensure that that the US Supreme Court.
The film also follows April DeBoer & Jayne Rowse, two of the plaintiffs who helped pave the way for the final decision. It should also be mentioned that it’s also a bit of a celebratory obituary for the organisation Freedom To Marry, which fought the good fight and then having won their battle, closed last February.
