Even before Sinister was released, writers Scott Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill were already talking about a sequel, however it’s only now that the film has been officially announced. Deadline says producer Jason Blum (Paranormal Activity, Insidious) is also back on-board, bringing us the movie through his Blumhouse Productions company.

Derrickson and C. Robert Cargill will once more write the screenplay, although Scott will not return as the director. As a result a search is on for a new filmmaker to tackle the follow-up. Derrickson can’t direct as he’s busy elsewhere, developing the video game adaptation Deus Ex: Human Revolution, with he will also co-write with C. Robert Cargill.

Sinister is a true crime author who moves into a house where a family was brutally murdered. He discovers that an evil presence lurks within his new abode, and that his family is in serious danger. The film sets itself up for a sequel by suggesting this is just one chapter in an ongoing sequence of paranormal murcer.

Sinister grossed more than $77 million worldwide from just a $3 million budget. Ethan Hawke is unlikely to return to star.

Scott Derrickson is a busy man. In the last few weeks it’s been announced the Sinister director is planning an adaptation of Stephen King’s The Breathing Method and has added Eric Bana to his movie Beware The Night. Now he’s got another film up his sleeve, as CBS Films has announced that Derrickson will take on a screen adaptation of the Square Enix video game Deus Ex: Human Revolution.

Derrickson will also write the screenplay for the film with C. Robert Cargill (Sinister). Set in the near future, when dramatic advances in science, specifically human augmentation, have triggered a technological renaissance, Deus Ex: Human Revolution follows Adam Jensen, an ex-SWAT security specialist who must embrace mechanical augments in order to unravel a global conspiracy.

Derrickson commented, “Deus Ex is a phenomenal cyberpunk game with soul and intelligence. By combining amazing action and tension with big, philosophical ideas, Deus Ex is smart, ballsy, and will make one hell of a movie. Cargill and I can’t wait to bring it to the big screen.”

The Deus Ex franchise was introduced in June 2000, and has since become a huge hit, with the latest entry, Deus Ex: Human Revolution, launched to massive sales and awards in 2011. That latest game will serve as the primary template for the film. It isn’t known when the movie might go into production.

Derrickson is set to both direct and co-write (with Paul Boardman) the paranormal police thriller, which follows a New York police officer investigating real life demon possessions, exorcisms and werewolves after dark. Mark Wahlberg was previously under consideration for the lead role, but he passed and so now Eric Bana has entered negotiations.

It isn’t known how close Bana is to signing on or when the movie might go into production.

Now Deadline reports he’s sticking with the Sinister production team and taking on an adaptation of Stephen King’s novella The Breathing Method.

The tale is a only part of the anthology Different Season that hasn’t made it to the screen before (others became the likes of The Shawshank Redemption, Apt Pupil, and Stand By Me). It follows Dr. Emlyn McCarron, who recounts an experience during the 1930s when he helped a young woman give birth to an illegitimate child. However during the birth things go horrible wrong. The name of the story comes from a book that Dr. McCarron wrote about helping women through childbirth, which is how the main female character in the story comes to find him.

Scott Teems will come up with the script, and once that’s done they’ll seek financing.

When The Exorcism of Emily Rose director Scott Derrickson strayed from horror with The Day The earth Stood Still is didn’t work out so well, and as a result he returned to creepiness with Sinister (while also developing the biblically based Goliath).

Now he’s signed up for another chilling tale, Beware The Night, according to TheWrap. Derrickson will both direct and re-write the paranormal police thriller, which follows a New York police officer investigating real life demon possessions, exorcisms and werewolves after dark.

Apparently Mark Wahlberg was offered the lead role, but he passed, so it’s still up for grabs.
