Prequels to classic tales seem to be popular at the moment, from Frankenstein to Wizard Of Oz, and now Pinocchio is getting in on the action. Deadline reports 20th Century Fox has acquired Michael Vukadinovich’s spec screenplay, The Three Misfortunes of Geppetto, with Real Steel and Night At The Museum helmer Shawn Levy set to direct.
The script focuses on Geppetto’s life before creating the Pinocchio marionette, following his trials and tribulations through war and misfortune, while trying to win over his true love. It all sounds a bit strange, seeing as Geppetto has always been a bit of an irrelevancy before Pinocchio was brought to life. However the script must have something about it, as Fox bought it barely a moment after it had gone on the market.
This is the third Pinocchio related project in development. Guillermo del Toro is teaming up with The Jim Henson Company for a 3D stop-motion animation project, while Warner Bros. has a live-action Pinocchio project in the works, which Tim Burton is circling.
