Even before Venom popped up in Spider-man 3, there’s been talk of giving the character his own movie, but it’s only in the last year or so Sony’s really been pushing to make it a reality (they flirted with a Gary Ross directed version just after Spider-man 3, but that fell apart). Now the LA Times says Chronicle director Josh Trank is in negotiations to direct Venom.
While early talk about the Venom movie back in 2008 had Topher Grace returning to the role, he’s long gone from the Venom movie. However what isn’t known is whether Sony is seeing this is a completely separate entity, or if it will fit into the rebooted world it’s creating with The Amazing Spider-man.
Sony is currently looking for a new screenwriter to take over from the likes of Jacob Aaron Estes and the Zombieland team of Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick, who worked on previous drafts of the screenplay.
