Despite there being less than five weeks until the planned release, Paramount has made the surprising move to push G.I. Joe Retaliation from June 29th to March 29th, 2013, with the given reasoning that they want convert it to 3D, and this will give them adequate time to do that.
An unnamed Paramount executive commented, “We’re going to do a conscientious 3D job because we’ve seen how it can better box office internationally. Jim Cameron did all of Titanic’s 3D in post – and look how well that movie turned out.” Paramount put up 50% of the money for the film, and THR suggests they think they only way they’re getting that investment back is with 3D. It sounds it bit like an excuse to us and that the real reason is the film isn’t living up to expectations, especially coming days after Battleship flopped horribly in the US – despite decent buzz – and so they’re hoping this can turn things around,
The action sequel is now going up against Summit’s Stephenie Meyer adaptation The Host, and Tyler Perry’s The Marriage Counselor.
