Quite a while ago now, Marvel staked out an August 14th, 2014 release date for a mystery movie. Recently the speculation has been that this would be a Guardians Of The Galaxy film, although it’s only now at Comic-Con that Marvel has confirmed this, as well as the fact it’s going animated.
Like The Avengers, Guardians Of The Galaxy is a superhero team, largely made up of lesser known characters. In the movie they’ll journey to Earth to protect the planet from an upcoming attack by their enemies, another alien race known as the Bardoon. The superhero line-up will include Gamora, the adopted daughter of Thanos (the evil-doer glimpsed at the end of Avengers); Drax The Destroyer, an incredibly powerful alien whose sole purpose in life is to destroy Thanos; Groot, a super-smart living plant who can regenerate himself; Rocket Raccoon, the leader of the Guardians, who is a talking, bipedal space raccoon who is also an expert marksman; and Star-Lord, a former Earth astronaut called Peter Quill who becomes a super-powered galactic cop.
What’s not clear is if, despite being animated, Guardians will fit into the mythology built up in The Avengers etc., or if this will be completely separate. The fact Thanos is involved would suggest it is tied in, but quite how that will work is yet to be seen. The concept art above was released by Marvel to coincide with the Comic-Con announcement.
