A lot of people thought it would many years before a filmed gross £100 million at the UK box office, and just a few months ago if you’d said the one to do it would be a Bond movie, most people would have simply laughed at you. However Skyfall has done just that, with Sony & MGM revealing that the Sam Mendes directed movie has now taken £100,460,679 in the UK and Ireland, becoming the first film to ever pass that milestone.
It comes at the same time as the film has crossed $1 billion worldwide, joining a select band of less that 15 movies to ever reach that level (although it is 2012’s third film to do so after Avengers and Dark Knight Rises).
Skyfall’s UK gross of course means it’s now the highest grossing film ever in Britain, overtaking Avatar’s $94 million. The previous highest grossing Bond outing was Casino Royale, which took £55 million. As Skyfall isn’t far off doubling that, it really is an astonishing achievement.
