Homosexuality it a massively controversial subject in India at the moment, with moves to provide legal and social protections coming up against entrenched and very vocal homophobia in large sections of the population.
One film that tried to combat that was 2010’s Dunno Y…Na Jaane Kyon, one of the few films to emerge from Bollywood with a sensitive gay theme (it’s billed as the first Indian film with two men kissing). The movie won several awards and became a success, despite protests greeting its premiere at the the Kashish Mumbai International Queer Film Festival and many cinemas boycotting the movie.
As Gay Star News points out, one of the actors in the film, Yuvraaj Parashar, was even disowned by his parents for appearing in the movie, saying they did not want to see ‘his face even in death’.
Now a sequel is coming, and thankfully Parashar hasn’t let his experience with the first put him off as he’s returning alongside original cast members Kapil Sharma and Zeenat Aman.
The first film was a drama following a man exploring his gay identity, while the sequel is billed as more of a rom com.
A teaser for the movie has now been released, which you can watch above. The film will debut in 2014.
