Fans of unusual musicals will know that John Cameron Mitchell’s creation, Hedwig & The Angry Inch, is one of the best out there – and the 2001 film version is simply awesome. Now it’s going back to the stage, with The New York Times reporting that Neil Patrick Harris is set to star.
Hedwig is about an East German immigrant to the US, whose botched sex change operation leaves her with the titular ‘angry inch’. After her relationship with a GI breaks down, she starts to date young hottie Tommy Gnosis, who leaves her behind when he takes her music and becomes a rock star.
The new production is set to premiere in the spring of 2014. While the show started off-Broadway in 1998, this will be the first time it’s been staged in New York’s main theatre district. David Binder has apparently been working on a Broadway version for years, but it’s only now moving forward with NPH in the lead.
John Cameron Mitchell said last year that he was working on a sequel, but there’s been little news on that since last July.
