The new, updated version of the classic musical Annie is gearing up to shoot, and it’s already got Quvenzhane Wallis, Jamie Foxx, Cameron Diaz and Rose Byrne on-board. Now Deadline reports that they’ve been joined by Broadwalk Empire star Bobby Cannavale.
The music for this new version has been updated by Will Smith and Jay-Z score, although it’s not known yet quite how contemporary the tunes will become and whether we’ll get a hip-hop version of Tomorrow. The plot remains the same though, with orphan Annie (Wallis) having a hard-luck life in the foul orphanage run by Miss Hannigan (Diaz). She’s then taken in by the filthy rich Benjamin Stacks (Foxx), who initially doesn’t really want her, but soon falls for the plucky youngster’s charms.
Cannavale will be playing what appears to be a new character, a “bulldog political adviser” to Foxx’s character, who in this revamped version is considering a run for Mayor of New York City, in this contemporary take on the tale.
Will Gluck is directing from a screenplay he is currently rewriting, which was originally written by Aline Brosh McKenna and Emma Thompson. Annie is currently set for release December 25th, 2014
