Up until now Derek Cianfrance has stuck with relatively indie dramas such as Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond The Pines, but now he’s planning something a little different, as TheWrap reports that he wants to make, ESPN: These Guys Have All The Fun, for Focus Features.
You might now think a movie about the creation of a sports broadcaster would be that interesting, but the book the movie will be based on, by Andrew Miller and Tom Shales, has intrigued Hollywood since it was published back in 2011. Initially Fox bought the rights, but they couldn’t make it work so it’s now gone to Focus Features.
The book ‘chronicles the cable network’s rise to power using the voices of past and present ESPN personalities and producers, including Bill Simmons, Chris Berman and Keith Olbermann’.
They’ve also brought on Michael De Luca and Dana Brunetti, who have some experience with this sort of thing, as they also produced The Social Network.
