Over the weekend, James Wan became only the third director to have two movies in one year that opened above $40 million at the US box office, with The Conjuring and Insidious Chapter Two (the first to do it were the Wachowskis with The Matrix sequels). Unsurprisingly, after the success of the Insidious follow-up, Entertainment One (eOne), FilmDistrict, and Sony Pictures Worldwide Acquisitions have been quick to announce they are developing Insidious 3.
However, whether Wan will have a chance to direct is another matter, as he’s currently on the Fast & Furious 7 set, which should keep him busy for quite a while. However Leigh Whannell, who wrote both Insidious and Insidious Chapter 2, has signed on to pen the third instalment, but there’s no word on whether Wan will be anything more than a producer this time around. Jason Blum and his Blumhouse Productions are also back to produce.
Blum commented,”FilmDistrict, eOne and SPWA have been incredible partners on the Insidious franchise. We are all so grateful for how audiences embraced James Wan and Leigh Whannell ‘s latest film and are excited to see what Leigh has in store for the third chapter.”
The first Insidious told the story of Josh and Renai Lambert and their son Dalton, confronting the demons that possess the young boy. Insidious Chapter 2 follows the haunted Lambert family as they seek to uncover the mysterious childhood secret that has left them dangerously connected to the spirit world. Insidious 3 comes to cinemas September 2014.
