Rupert Wyatt had great success with Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, but after stepping away from the sequel, he’s flirted with other movies, but hasn’t actually made anything. Now Variety reports that he’s got another one he’s circling, as he’s in talks to direct a remake of The Gambler.
Mark Wahlberg is in early negotiations to star in the film. He replaces Leonardo DiCaprio, who was attached to star when Todd Phillips was set to direct. Both dropped out when the film took longer to develop than anticipated.
The 1974 James Caan movie was about ‘a literature professor with a gambling problem runs into trouble with some local gangsters’. The Departed’s William Monahan wrote the remake script. There’s no news on when it might shoot.
There are also rumours Wyatt may be approached about Star Trek 3, but while JJ Abrams says they’d be lucky to have him, at the moment it’s too early to say whether he’ll actually be offered the job.
