Divergent may not hit cinemas until March, but the movie’s director, Neil Burger, won’t be back to helm the planned second part of Summit/Lionsgate’s sci-fi franchise, Insurgent, according to Variety. It’s not 100% clear why he won’t be returning, although Lionsgate has suggested it was Burger’s own decision.
While some are speculating the reason could be that the studio isn’t happy with his work so far on the first film, however it’s more likely that with Insurgent already set for release March 2015, Burger feels he doesn’t have time to do it justice.
Here’s Divergent’s synopsis: ‘Divergent is a thrilling action-adventure set in a future world where people are divided into distinct factions based on their personalities. Tris Prior (Shailene Woodley) is warned she is Divergent and will never fit into any one group. When she discovers a conspiracy to destroy all Divergents, she must find out what makes being Divergent so dangerous before it’s too late.’ The likes of Theo James, Kate Winslet, Miles Teller, Ansel Elgort, and Jai Courtney also star.
In addition to Divergent and Insurgent, Summit is planning a third movie, called Allegiant, on March 18, 2016.
