Ed Helms was supposed to be rebooting the Vacation franchise, but that movie has been put on hold indefinitely. However it seems he’s still keen to take something from the 80s and give a new take, as Variety reports that he’s joined a remake of The Naked Gun spoof series.
Reno 911! creators Thomas Lennon and Robert Ben Garant have been brought on to write the screenplay, with Ed Helms playing Detective Frank Drebin, as originally played by Leslie Nielsen. There are rumours however that it may be a little different to the original movies and that it won’t be a straightforward police procedural.
Naked Gun began with the short-lived TV series Police Squad!, which was created by the team behind the spoof masterpiece Airplane!. It was cancelled after just six episodes in 1982, but a few years later in 1988 it took to the big screen as The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad. That spawned the sequels The Naked Gun 2½ in 1991 and Naked Gun 33 1/3 in 1994.
At the moment the remake doesn’t have a director attached and it isn’t known when production may begin.
