The Purge earned over $90 million worldwide from just a $3 million budget and has since found further success on DVD. Unsurprisingly it’s meant Universal Pictures wants a sequel and they want it fast, as they’ve set a June 20th, 2014 release date for The Purge 2.
That means it need to go into production pretty soon, but first they need a cast. Now it’s started to come together as Deadline has revealed that Frank Grillo has signed on to star.
No specific plot details have been revealed, and it isn’t known how this sequel will follow The Purge. The first film is set in the not-so-distant future. Crime has been nearly eradicated except for one night out of the year, known as The Purge, when for a 12-hour period any and all crime is legal, including murder. Presumably The Purge 2 will follow what happens during that time, although it’s not known if it’ll directly relate to the first movie or if it will follow a completely different set of characters dealing with the terror.
The Purge’s James DeMonaco is writing and directing the sequel, with Jason Blum, Sebastian LeMercier, Michael Bay, Bradley Fuller and Andrew Form producing.
