After Mrs. Doubtfire became a big hit in 1994 there was quite a lot of talk about a sequel but ultimately they came to nothing. Then in 2001 there was more talk, with Bonnie Hunt signing up to write and direct.
However now 21 years after the film came out, rumours of a sequel have re-emerged, with THR reporting that Fox has attached Robin Williams and director Chris Columbus to return to the world of the Scottish nanny.
David Berenbaum (Elf) has signed on to write the screenplay, although nothing has been revealed about the direction the story will take. It was Berenbaum who was the impetus behind the revival, as Williams and Columbus hadn’t been interested in any of the various follow-up scripts, until they heard the new writer’s idea.
In the original, Williams play a recently divorced father who, in order to be closer to his children, takes on the persona of a Scottish nanny, Euphegenia Doubtfire, and goes in to look after his kids, without them knowing who he really is.
