Various names have been rumoured for the title role in Marvel’s Doctor Strange, such as Benedict Cumberbatch. However the man who’s likely to take the job has slightly come out of left field, as THR reports that Joaquin Phoenix is in talks for the role.
Although he hasn’t accepted yet, it’s believed Marvel is hoping to get him to accept quickly and they may even officially announce him during their Comic-Con 2014 panel. It’s believed a sticking point might arise if Marvel wants Phoenix to sign one of their usual long-term contracts, as he’s more likely to want a per-film deal.
If he does sign on, it’d certainly be something different for the actor, who has generally steered clear of big blockbuster type movies. However it’s suggested co-stars such as Jeremy Renner (The Immigrant), Scarlett Johansson (Her), and Josh Brolin (Inherent Vice) have helped convince him it’s worth becoming part of the Marvel Universe.
If you don’t know the character, Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats.
