Tom Hardy says he doesn’t mind celebrities talking about their sexuality, but if you’re going to ask him about his, you’d better have a damn good question. He showed that in a recent interview where he expertly and rather smartly shut down a journalist asking roundabout questions linking the bisexual character Tom plays in the Kray twins biopic to the star’s own sexuality.
The journalist was fishing around the fact that a few years ago in an interview with Attitude, Hardy talked about the fact he’s previously messed around with guys, saying “I’m an actor for fuck’s sake. I’ve played with everything and everyone. I love the form and the physicality, but now that I’m in my thirties, it doesn’t do it for me.”
The new, slightly tetchy confrontation happened at the Toronto International Film Festival, when Graeme Coleman from Canadian LGBT-outlet Daily Xtra asked, “In the film, your character Ronnie is very open. But given interviews you’ve done in the past, your own sexuality seems a bit more ambiguous. Do you find it hard for celebrities to talk to media about their sexuality?”
“What on earth are you on about?” Tom responds – which is fair enough, as he hasn’t exactly hidden his past, unless you think there’s something more he’s hiding.
“I was referring to an interview given to Attitude magazine a few years ago,” Coleman responds.
Tom isn’t having any of it though, saying, “But what is your question?”
A slightly flusters Coleman then says, “I was wondering if you find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality.”
“I don’t find it difficult for celebrities to talk about their sexuality,” Hardy answers, before adding “Um, are you asking me about my sexuality?”
“Um…sure,” says Coleman.
“Why?”, Hardy wants know.
Coleman can only come up with an inarticulate, ‘Um’, so Tom says a very final, “Thank you,” and moves things on.
