It’s not often I post a film here where I’d recommend you watch it in tandem with reading a short story, but in this case it’s well worth it. The short Danny Wylde was inspired by a semi-autobiographical short story/essay by Christopher Zeischegg (Wylde was/is his stage name), and reading that certainly helps illuminate and add to the film.
The short follows Wylde, who in narration lets us know how far down the rabbit hole he has gone, having gone through the world of gay, bi and straight porn to a potentially more dangerous place. It’s a good looking and well-made movie, which squeezes quite a lot into three minutes. As with the essay, it makes you question whether it’s the real truth or not.
As co-writer/producer Luka Fisher let us know, ‘Danny Wylde is a short existential horror film about the ‘true life’ of ex-pornstar turned novelist Danny Wylde, who has been profiled by Vice Magazine and appeared in such cult classics as The Canyons with James Deen and Lindsey Lohan. It may also be the first ever soft-core snuff film.’
We ought to point out though that it is rather NSFW, so be careful where you watch it. Take a look at Danny Wylde below and read the accompanying, rather dark essay here.
