Tovey will play Joe Pitt, a married, Mormon attorney, who is secretly gay and starts a relationship with a man called Louis. Gough is set to be his wife, whose life starts to fall apart as her husband realises who he is and begins to live a new wife. Garfield meanwhile will be Louis’ former boyfriend, who is diagnosed with AIDS and as the disease ravages his body, he begins to have fantastical visions.
The National Theatre staged the first international production of the play in 1992, with the new production due to be staged at the same venue 25 years later, starting May 2017. Further casting will be announced soon, with many expecting other well-known names to fill the other roles.
