Theo and Hugo has proven a big success at film festivals, including getting a very good reception at the BFI Flare: London LGBT Film Festival earlier this year. Now it’s on its way to UK cinemas, and a NSFW trailer has arrived to give us a feel for the film.
Here’s the synopsis: ‘Théo and Hugo encounter each other’s bodies one night in a Paris sex club. Wanting to know more about each other, they leave the club and drift down the deserted streets of nocturnal Paris. Suddenly they find themselves confronted by a sense of reality that wipes out their freedom and lends each step an existential helplessness.
‘Do they want to know more about each other? Will their trust be rewarded? What are their expectations?
‘Olivier Ducastel and Jacques Martineau (Drôle de Félix, Born in 68) deliver their most ambitious film yet, displaying a consummate sensitivity in bringing us closer to two men as they strive for intimacy in spite of being stalled by their insecurity.’
It’s also been noted for how explicit it is, with co-director Jaques Martineau commenting: “We were telling a real story and we were all focused on that so it made filming the sex as natural as we’d imagined it when we conceived the project. It’s not just a scene of sexual intercourse and the demands of the story meant that the ‘performance’ of filming actors with erections faded into the background (even if it’s not the same as filming a family meal!). We had to believe in these two people falling in love and the passionate surge of desire.”
Take a look at the trailer below. It’ll be in UK cinemas on September 9th.
