New The Lone Ranger Trailer – Johnny Depp and Armie Hammer go for a western spectacular

December 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Mixing an old TV western with big budget action didn’t work to well with the Will Smith starrer The Wild Wild West, but then they said Pirate movies were box office poison until Jerry Bruckheimer, Gore Verbinski and Johnny Depp came up with Pirates Of The Caribbean. Now Bruckheimer, Verbinski and Depp are back with The Lone Ranger, and the first full trailer for the movie has now shown up.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From producer Jerry Bruckheimer and director Gore Verbinski, the filmmaking team behind the blockbuster “Pirates of the Caribbean” franchise, comes Disney/Jerry Bruckheimer Films’ “The Lone Ranger,” a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes.Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.’

The $200 million movie is due out August 2013.

The Lone Ranger Trailer & Poster

October 3, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first trailer for The Lone Ranger has shown up online, but unfortunately at the moment the embed we have of it isn’t that great (we’ll hopefully be able to remedy that soon). The trailer premiered on The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, although the embed comes from CBM. It’s interesting that the trailer plays up the action and intrigue, rather than the humour and wild west setting. Expect to see a lot more in the run up to the July 2013 release of the movie.

Seven New Pics Of Depp & Hammer In Lone Ranger Arrive

October 2, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With its vast budget, Disney has a lot riding on The Lone Ranger and so they’ve started the marketing effort early, releasing seven new images, along with comments from director Gore Verbinski, even though the film won’t arrive in UK cinemas until August 2013.

If nothing else, they suggest the film, starring Armie Hammer in the title role, will look good, and Johnny Depp as Tonto will spend a lot of time wearing a dead bird on his head. Take a look at the new images below, along with Verbinski’s comments, which come via USA Today.

“This is their bad-ass moment. Johnny and I have been able to create a really good dynamic between these two guys.”

“It’s a dysfunctional buddy movie. It’s two guys who start literally and figuratively handcuffed together who end up on the same mission with completely different worldviews. They sort of rub off on one another. But they have plenty of disagreements.”

“We made a big Western the old-fashioned way. You have to go there. This is right before the Lone Ranger and Tonto head out on their journey together. This is the first time they make a decision to work as a team.”

“[Depp is] is an odd-shaman, an outcast from his own tribe, who has created his own mystical world. [His crow headpiece is] his companion. It’s a stuffed bird that he feeds birdfeed.”

“All the traditional westerns are about choice and the individual. When progress comes it’s much more difficult to define the individual in that world. The train represents all of that. What do we give up in the name of progress?”

“This is during an attack sequence. The film has everything you can want, from Cavalry to Comanche. My respect for Westerns have gone way, way up. It’s hard and treacherous work. It’s hard to find people these days who can ride horses like that and jump onto trains.”

“It was a modern train clad in a steam engine just to get through all the work we had to do The train sequences are really entertaining.”

Crush Of The Day: Armie Hammer

September 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac 2 Comments

I don’t know whether to love of loathe Armie Hammer. Not only is he blessed with a gorgeous face on a strapping, 6ft 4in body (which he certainly takes care of), but he’s also an extremely good actor. Not only that, but he was born into the fabulously wealthy Hammer family – his great-grandfather and namesake was Armand Hammer, founder of Occidental Petroleum (that said he also has some family links he probably doesn’t boast about as much, as his great-great-grandfather, Julius Hammer, is thought to have founded the Communist Party in New York).

His rise as a bona fide movie star is proof, in essence, that the world is not a fair place.

He first came to prominence playing the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network, although by that time Gossip Girl and Reaper fans would already have been aware of him. Since then his star has continued to rise as Clyde Tolson in J. Edgar and as Prince Alcott in Mirror Mirror. Next summer he gets his biggest role yet, taking the title part in the Lone Ranger.

He may not have any releases at the moment, but I couldn’t resist making him my Crush Of The Day, simply because he’s so purdy. Click on the pics below for larger versions and enjoy the gratuitous handsomeness. Oh, and if you want some more pics and a trailer featuring Armie Hammer with his shirt off, click here. Mirror Mirror (DVD)

July 27, 2012 By Stephen Sclater Leave a Comment

Starring: Lily Collins, Armie Hammer, Julia Roberts, Nathan Lane
Director: Tarsem
Running Time: 101 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: July 30th 2012

Hollywood is now investing a lot of time and money into fairytales of old, as with today’s CGI anything goes. You wait ages for a Snow White films and two turn up, the same can also be said of waiting for a Tarsem Singh film, as we hadn’t had anything since 2006’s The Fall, and now we’ve had Immortals and Mirror Mirror within a few months of one another. One does not normally associate a Tarsem Singh film with comedy, but this is what has he has delivered with Mirror Mirror, which is unusual considering his inability to connect with the audience with his previous films.

Tarsem Singh is a cinematic visionary who tends to focus more on imagery, costumes and style than with plots, and again has delivered something very similar with Mirror Mirror. Personally I enjoy watching Singh’s films and marvel at the beauty and striking canvas he envisages like a true artist (it is definitely style over substance), along with the creator of his incredible costumes, Eiko Ishioka, who unfortunately passed away this year. J. Edgar (DVD)

June 11, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Leonardo DiCaprio, Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas
Director: Clint Eastwood
Running Time: 130 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: June 11th, 2012

J. Edgar is a movie that’s perhaps better off on DVD and Blu-ray than it was in cinemas. The reason for that is that it’s a rather narratively complex beast and so takes at least a couple of viewing to properly unravel. Its problem is that the first viewing is likely to seem rather dull to many, so they’re less likely to want to revisit it.

Leonardo DiCaprio plays J. Edgar Hoover, who for nearly half a century oversaw the FBI from when it was a fledgling organisation, though the depression and era of the gangster, onto the red scare and beyond. The film sees Hoover as an old man dictating his memoirs, while in flashback we see his earlier days and how he quickly climbed to the top of the Bureau Of Investigation (as it was initially known) and used the likes of the Lindbergh Baby kidnapping to increase the power of the organisation. Armie Hammer & More Join Sci-fi Thriller Cut Bank

April 25, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’re big fans of Armie Hammer here at BGPS, and can’t help but get excited whenever he signs up for a new movie. Now he’s been announced as part of a great cast that’s been revealed for the sci-fi thriller Cut Bank, with Deadline reporting that Armie Hammer, Ben Kingsley, John Malkovich, Michael Sheen, and Teresa Palmer have all signed up for the film.

The story is set in Cut Bank, Montana, and focusses on a mechanic and an ex-football player who try to out get of the small town, which they discover is frozen in time. It isn’t known which specific characters this quintet of actors will play.

Matt Shakman is directing from a screenplay by Roberto Patino, which landed on the Black List of best unproduced screenplays back in 2009. Entertainment One will start shopping the project to international buyers at the Cannes Film Festival, although it isn’t known when production might begin.

First Pic Of Depp & Hammer In Lone Ranger Debuts

March 8, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

After plenty of problems with an ever-ballooning budget that almost saw Disney scrap the film, The Lone Ranger is finally shooting, and to prove it, Jerry Bruckheimer has tweeted the first image from the set, showing a bemasked Armie Hammer as the title character, alongside Johnny Depp as Tonto (Depp now only signs onto movies if they promise he can wear completely OTT costumes).

According to Disney, ‘The Lone Ranger is a thrilling adventure infused with action and humor, in which the famed masked hero is brought to life through new eyes. Native American spirit warrior Tonto (Johnny Depp) recounts the untold tales that transformed John Reid (Armie Hammer), a man of the law, into a legend of justice—taking the audience on a runaway train of epic surprises and humorous friction as the two unlikely heroes must learn to work together and fight against greed and corruption.’

And I don’t know the politics of this, but is it not racist if Depp pretends to be a Native American, but it would be if he blacked up? It’s all very confusing.

William Fichtner Takes Over Lone Ranger Villain Role

February 23, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The delay to the shooting schedule of Lone Ranger caused by Disney putting on the brakes while they sorted out the ever-ballooning budget was inevitably going to cause some casting issues. Most of the actors have stayed onboard, but one who was forced to drop out is Dwight Yoakam.

Now Deadline reports William Fichtner has been brought in to replace him, which is good news as the Drive Angry actor is always good value for money. Fichtner will play Butch Cavendish, leader of the Cavendish gang and the pic’s primary villain. Christopher Lloyd played this same character in 1981’s The Legend of the Lone Ranger.

Shooting on The Lone Ranger is due to start soon for release on May 31, 2013, with Johnny Depp, Armie Hammer, Ruth Wilson, Helena Bonham Carter, Barry Pepper, James Badge Dale, Tom Wilkinson and James Frain all onboard

Armie Hammer Goes Shirtless In Mirror Mirror

January 28, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

As the Winklevoss twins in The Social Network and Clyde Tolson in J. Edgar, the impossibly handsome Armie Hammer has gained quite a few fans. Next up for him is playing Prince Alcott in Mirror Mirror, the new family friendly take on the classic Snow White tale.

A new featurette for the film has just popped up online, which is basically just a glorified trailer, but does give us a delectable glimpse of Armie with his shirt off. It’s pleasing to see that he’s resisted Hollywood’s obsession with trimming the chest fur. You can see the full featurette below. The film’s out at the end of March.
