Karate Kid and After Earth star Jaden Smith may only be 16-years-old but he’s keen to show that he has little time for the sort of gender norms that many less enlightened people seem to be are immutable part of the universe.
He’s been spotted several times wearing skirts and dresses and other so-called ‘female’ clothing. After tabloids wrote stories about this fact, he wrote a Tweet which suggests he has little time for such thinking, saying, “Went to TopShop to Buy Some Girl Clothes, I Mean ‘Clothes.'”
He also shared that he had a situation where, ‘That Moment When Your Wearing A Dress With No Pants And You Swerve Way To Hard.’
If you look up the pics you’ll see that it’s a pretty good look for him, and he’s right, it does look like he’s just creating his own style rather than him specifically wearing ‘women’s’ clothes or making a statement/looking for publicity (he’s previously spoken of his dislike of celebs who wear things just to try and get attention).
Inevitably Jaden’s style has had some commentators frothing at the mouth, with some people unable to realise that most types of clothing have been favoured by one gender or another at different points in time. The Karate Kid remake was a surprise hit on its 2010 release, earning $343 million worldwide. While there was early talk of a sequel, that quietened down after Jaden Smith went off to make After Earth. However now it seems things are moving forward on The Karate Kid 2 once more.

It certainly seems as if they’re trying to sell M. Night Shyamalan’s After Earth as being a bit like Avatar. You certainly got that feel from the trailer and now a new poster also gives a bit of a Pandoran feel, even though this is actually a futuristic Earth.
Jaden Smith had a big hit with The Karate Kid and after that Hollywood was falling over itself to offer him roles. However he’s taken his time to make sure he goes for exactly the right part, so that his first film following Karate Kid doesn’t arrive until next year, when he teams up with father Will for After Earth.
