American Made (Blu-ray Review) – Tom Cruise gets into the 1980s drug trade alongside the CIA

Starring: Tom Cruise, Domhnall Gleeson, Sarah Wright, Jesse Plemons, Caleb Landry Jones
Director: Doug Liman
Running Time: 115 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: December 26th 2017 (UK)

Barry Seal (Tom Cruise) is working as a pilot for TWA in the late 70s when she’s spotted by CIA agent Monty ‘Schafer’ (Domhnall Gleeson). Schafer wants Barry to fly reconnaissance missions in Central America, where the Soviet Union is backing Communist militias. His success at that leads to missions where he acts of the CIA courier to General Noriega in Panama, as well as helping to arm the anti-Communist Nicaraguan Contras in Honduras.

All this leads him to some dodgy places, including into the sphere of the Medellin Cartel, who get Barry to help them smuggle drugs into the US on his return trips. The CIA turn a blind eye to his side job as long as he still gets results. However, not every US law enforcement agency is as keen to ignore Barry’s smuggling. [Read more…]

Sarah Paulson, Matthew Rhys & More Join Steven Spielberg’s Pentagon Papers Film

June 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in March news emerged not just that Steven Spielberg was working on a film about the Pentagon Papers, but that he’d already got Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks onboard to star. Now the director has been filling out the acting ensemble, as Variety reports that Sarah Paulson, Bob Odenkirk, Matthew Rhys, Bradley Whitford, Carrie Coon, Jesse Plemons, David Cross, Alison Brie, Bruce Greenwood, Tracy Letts, Michael Stuhlbarg, and Zach Woods have all signed onto the movie. There’s no news on the exact roles they’ll play.

The movie will be based on Liz Hannah’s spec script, which recently landed one of the top spots on the Black List of the best unproduced screenplays. It’s ‘a drama about the Washington Post’s role in exposing the Pentagon Papers in 1971, and how the Post’s editor Ben Bradlee and publisher Kay Graham challenged the federal government over their right to publish them.’

The Pentagon Papers were a Top Secret report commissioned to look at what was happening in the Vietnam War. It spoke of a dramatic escalation that was being hidden from the public, and much of its information seemed to support the growing idea that the war was unwinnable. After it was leaked to the Washington Post, the newspaper ended up in a legal battle with the government over whether they could publish more of what they’d learned from the report.

At a time when the current US President is at war with the media and angry about leaks, this look at freedom of the press, the First Amendment and government lies could end up being extremely timely. To ensure the film can properly address current events, the film is on an accelerated production schedule so that it can get an Oscar qualifying run at the end of the year, before getting a wider release in early 2018.

Moonlight Leads Independent Spirit Award Noms, With Plenty More Gay-Themed Films In The Mix Too

November 23, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

moonlight-slideIt’s certainly been a good year for gay-themed films amongst the nominations for the Independent Spirit Awards, the pre-eminent indie awards ceremony (films are only eligible if they have a budget of less and $20 million), which takes place ahead of the Oscars each year. Leading the way is the acclaimed Moonlight, Barry Jenkins’ film about a young, gay African-American, which picked up six noms, equal with the Shia LaBeouf starrer, American Honey.

It’s up for Best Feature, Best Screenplay, Best Director, Best Cinematography, Best Editing, and is the sole nominee for the Robert Altman Award for Best Ensemble.

Also gettin multiple nods was Other People, starring Jesse Plemons as a gay guy who heads home to take care of his dying mother. It picked up four nominations for Plemons, co-star Molly Shannon, Chris Kelly for his screenplay and director Chris Kelly for Best First Feature.

However, Moonlight and Other People weren’t only the gay-themed films up for awards, with Spa Night (about a closeted Korean-American teenager) director Andrew Ahn up for the John Cassavettes Award (for Best Feature Made For Under $5,000) and Kiehl’s Someone to Watch Award. Lesbian crime drama Women Who Kill, was also nominated for the Kiehl’s Award, for director Ingrid Jungermann, while Certain Women was nominated for Best Director for Kelly Reichardt, while Lily Gladstone, whose character falls for Kristen Stewart in the movie, is up for Best Supporting Female.

There were also a couple of gay-themed documentaries in the mix, with ball-culture doc Kiki up for the Truer Than Fiction Award, while I Am Not Your Negro, about gay, African-American writer James Baldwin’s unfinished novel, Remember This House, is included in the Best Docuemntary category.

It’s certainly an impressive validation for LGBT-themed movies this year, with the hope that at least some of them will go on to be winners when the gongs are handed out early next year. Take a look at the full list of nominees below. [Read more…]

Other People Trailer – Jesse Plemons plays a young gay man looking after a sick Molly Shannon

July 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

other-people-slideOther People got a lot of buzz when it debuted at Sundance, but also sparked a little controversy after reports that people walked out during a gay sex scene featuring Jesse Plemons’ character. Plemons reacted by saying, “I’d love to talk to them and figure out what it was about that scene that made them leave.”

However, despite that, the movie got huge amounts of attention, and now we can all get a taste, as the trailer has arrived.

Here’s the synopsis from Yahoo!: ‘Based on true events in the life of director Chris Kelly (a writer for SNL and Broad City),Other People follows the story of a struggling, gay comedy writer (Jesse Plemons) who moves to his childhood home to care for his sick mother (Molly Shannon).’  The film will be closing OUTFEST in Los Angeles on July 17th.

Black Mass (Blu-ray Review)

March 20, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Johnny Depp, Joel Edgerton, Benedict Cumberbatch, Dakota Johnson, Jesse Plemons
Director: Scott Cooper
Running Time: 123 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: March 21st 2016 (UK)

At the beginning of Black Mass I was worried that the whole thing was going to be spoiled by Johnny Depp’s makeup, or more particularly the ridiculously blue contact lenses he wears as part of his efforts to make himself look like the real James ‘Whitey’ Bulger. Thankfully, relatively quickly you get used to it, helped by the fact this is the best performance Depp has given in years.

The movie tells the real-life tale of Bulger, who grew up on the tough streets of South Boston before becoming a gangster and the leader of the vicious Winter Hill Gang. His childhood friend, John Connolly (Joes Edgerton), is now an FBI agent, who comes up with a plan he thinks can help the feds take down the Mafia and other parts of Boston’s organised crime. He wants to get Bulger to turn informant, in return for the FBI turning a blind eye to his gang’s activities. [Read more…]

The Program (Blu-ray Review)

February 18, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Ben Foster, Chris O'Dowd, Jesse Plemons, Lee Pace, Guillaume Canet
Director: Stephen Frears
Running Time: 103 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: February 15th 2016 (UK)

Over the years, numerous movies about Lance Armstrong have been in the works but never got made. Indeed, one was about to move forward just as he admitted he had doped for his entire career. It’s almost a shame we don’t have a movie from when he was almost universally admired as a hero, so we could compare it to the darker world of The Program.

At the start of the movie Lance (Ben Foster) is an okay but unexceptional cyclist, who few think will ever do anything special. After overcoming testicular cancer, he returns with a passion to win, and knowing the world of cycling is riddled with cheats taking performance-enhancing drugs, he decides he will do the same, enlisting the help of Michele Ferrari (Guillaume Canet) to allow him to set up a ‘Program’ that will help him win, as well as arranging to have a team built around him that will ensure a Tour de France victory. Jesse Plemons Wants To Know Why People Walked Out Of His Gay Sex Scene During Sundance Film Screening

January 26, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

other-people-slide

You’d think people visiting a film festival such as Sundance would be pretty open and liberal, but it appears that’s not always the case, as there have been reports of people walking out of the much buzzed about Other People during a gay sex scene featuring Breaking Bad and Friday Night Lights star Jesse Plemons. In the movie, Plemons stars as a gay man who moves back in with his mother to look after her as she dies of cancer.

When informed by Vanity Fair of people leaving during his sex scene with Zach Woods, he says, “What? That’s too much… I’d love to talk to them and figure out what it was about that scene that made them leave.”

Indeed, the scene is reportedly not particularly explicit so it would appear it’s the gay-ness the walk-outs objected to.

Plemons was also inevitably asked about the ‘challenge’ of filming a gay sex scene, with the actor displaying more understanding of modern equality than the interviewer, saying “It’s a little weird, but in some ways it’s less weird than doing a straight sex scene, because we’re both nervous and freaked out.”

Take a look at the interview below. [Read more…]

The Program Trailer – Ben Foster is Lance Armstrong in Stephen Frears’ biopic

June 11, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

the-program-ben-fosterThe moment it became clear Lance Armstrong was finally going to admit to doping during his cycling career, Hollywood immediately jumped in and put several biopics in the works. The first to arrive is The Program, directed by Stephen Frears and with Ben Foster in the lead role.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘From Academy Award® nominated director Stephen Frears (The Queen, Philomena) and producers Working Title (The Theory Of Everything, Everest, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), comes the true story of the meteoric rise and fall of one of the most celebrated and controversial men in recent history, Lance Armstrong.

‘Inspired by the award winning book “Seven Deadly Sins” by David Walsh, and featuring a stellar cast including Ben Foster, Chris O’Dowd, Guillaume Canet (Tell No One) and Jesse Plemons (Breaking Bad), this tense and suspenseful thriller looks at how one of the greatest deceptions in the modern era was uncovered while Armstrong convinced the world he was a hero, winning the Tour de France seven times.’

It’ll be out in the UK towards the end of the year. [Read more…]

Jesse Plemons To Gay A Gay Saturday Night Live Writer In The Film Other People

October 20, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

jesse-plemons-slideBattleship and Breaking Bad actor Jesse Plemons has booked himself a new role (which will hopefully take the sting off the fact that for months he was rumoured to be the lead in the new Star Wars film, but ultimately won’t be in the movie at all). TheWrap reports he’s set to take the lead role in Other People, from writer/director Chris Kelly.

Plemons will play ‘a gay Saturday Night Live writer who returns home to Sacramento to be with his mother (Sissy Spacek), who is in the final stages of terminal cancer. While home, he struggles to deal with a painful recent breakup and reconcile with his conservative father’s disapproving attitude regarding his sexuality.’

It sounds like it’ll be a fairly personal project from Kelly, who is gay and an SNL writer himself, with three Emmy nominations to his name. Other People will mark his feature directorial debut.

To add a little extra cachet the talented Adam Scott (Parks & Recreation) will produce along with his wife Naomi. They’re currently putting all the pieces together in terms of financing with the hope of shooting the movie next year.
