October 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gold-slideMatthew McConaughey has certainly come a long way from being the king of awful rom-coms. Indeed, he hasn’t made one for year. Next up he’s got Gold, which those behind it must feel could be an awards contender as it’s being given an Oscar friendly Christmas release in the US.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘GOLD is the epic tale of one man’s pursuit of the American dream, to discover gold. Starring Oscar winner Matthew McConaughey as Kenny Wells, a prospector desperate for a lucky break, he teams up with a similarly eager geologist and sets off on an amazing journey to find gold in the uncharted jungle of Indonesia. The Sea of Trees Trailer – Matthew McConaughey stars in Gus Van Sant’s latest

August 9, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The-Sea-of-TreesGus Van Sant‘s The Sea of Trees premiered over a year ago at the Cannes Film Festival. However, it got a pretty bad reception, so release plans were put on hold and it’s believed the director retooled the movie somewhat. However, it’s getting a limited US release and will be available to stream on August 26th, and so a trailer has been released.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In this powerful story of love and redemption, Matthew McConaughey stars as Arthur Brennan, an American professor who travels to Japan in the midst of a personal crisis. As he wanders through a mysterious forest with a dark past, he experiences flashbacks of his fraught but loving relationship with his wife, Joan (Naomi Watts), and meets an enigmatic stranger, Takumi (Ken Watanabe), who is lost and injured.

‘Arthur devotes himself to saving Takumi and returning him home to safety, and the two embark on a spiritual, life-changing journey of friendship, discovery, and healing—one which may ultimately re-connect Arthur with his love for his wife.’ Take a look at the trailer below. [Read more…]

New Free State of Jones Trailer – Matthew McConaughey heads for the Civil War

May 24, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Free-State-of-Jones-slideIt seems like a long time ago that Matthew McConaughey was becoming a bit of a joke, who many people thought was a lousy actor who only produced an endless string of mediocre rom-com. Now he’s an Oscar-winner who tends to only make interesting choices and movie that are worth a watch.

Next up he’s got Free State Of Jones, which has released a new trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Written and directed by four-time Oscar nominee Gary Ross (The Hunger Games, Seabiscuit, Pleasantville), and starring Oscar® winner Matthew McConaughey, Free State of Jones is an epic action-drama set during the Civil War, and tells the story of defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. Banding together with other small farmers and local slaves, Knight launched an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. Knight continued his struggle into Reconstruction, distinguishing him as a compelling, if controversial, figure of defiance long beyond the War.’

It’ll be in UK cinemas in September. [Read more…]

Matthew McConaughey Circling Villainous Role In Stephen King’s The Dark Tower

November 17, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Matthew-McConaugheyFor decades Hollywood has been talking about adapting Stephen King’s popular series of novels, The Dark Tower. A couple of years ago it looked like it was going to happen with Ron Howard at the helm and both interlinked films and TV series proposed. However, it all fell apart over money and the studio reluctant to guarantee they’d see the whole thing through to the end.

Now though the adaptation is back on track, with Howard still involved as a producer, but Nikolaj Arcel set to direct. Now they’re looking to cast the film, with THR reporting that Matthew McConaughey may play the villain known as the Man in Black.

It’s very early stages though, and McConaughey hasn’t yet officially entered negotiations, although he has had a meeting with Arcel, and it appears they’d like him onboard.

Set in a fantasy version of the Wild West, King’s novels follow Deschain, the last in a long line of gunfighters, who journeys to The Dark Tower in a last-ditch effort to save humanity. Up against him is a demonic sorcerer who may be played by McConaughey.

Matthew McConaughey Up For The Billionaire’s Vinegar

March 27, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matthew-mcconaughey-magic-mikeIn the last few years Matthew McConaughey has certainly moved away from the lazy rom-coms that were in danger of turning career into a bit of joke. Indeed it surprised many when he put in a performance in Dallas Buyers Club that won him an Oscar, as they’d forgotten he’s actually really good when he puts his mind to it.

Now he’s set his sights on wine, or at least a movie about a bottle of Bordeaux. He’s attached to a movie version of Benjamin Wallace’s book The Billionaire’s Vinegar, according to Deadline, which is based around the true story of an extremely expensive bottle of wine that’s believed to have once belonged to Thomas Jefferson.

The story ‘starts in 1985, when a Forbes family member paid $156,000 at auction for a bottle of 1787 Chateau Lafite Bordeaux, which Christie’s of London billed as part of a Jefferson cache discovered in France. The wine was supplied by Hardy Rodenstock, a music manager-turned-wine dealer who somehow unearthed several bottles of old wine. After paying $500,000 for the Jefferson bottles, billionaire Bill Koch paid twice that for an investigation to confirm their origins and then sued Rodenstock. The title comes from the peculiar fact that collectors spend tons of money for wine they will never drink or even open.’

Indeed much of the tale is based around the odd preoccupations and interests of those who have too much money, and how prestige around owning certain objects can become of vital importance – far outstripping the intrinsic value of the objects themselves.

Michael Brandt and Derek Haas are behind the script, but it doesn’t appear a director is attached as yet.

Matthew McConaughey Will Be Born to Run

January 29, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matthew-mcconaughey-magic-mikeMatthew McConaughey is getting his running shoes on – or actually he’s taking them off – as he’s joined the adaptation of Christopher McDougall’s bestselling non-fiction book, Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen, according to Variety.

The book, ‘follows a journalist and often-injured runner who headed for Mexico’s Copper Canyons to find out how the Tarahumara Indians honed the ability to run hundreds of miles without rest or injury.’

McDougall begins to learn the secrets of the Indians barefoot running talents as he prepares to take part in a 50-mile race against the tribe and a number of American runners, including an ultra-marathoner, a young surfer and another barefoot running prodigy.

The book sold more than 2 million copies just in the US and helped spark a ‘barefoot’ running craze.

Matthew Michael Carnahan (World War Z) wrote the screenplay, although no director is involved at the moment.

Matthew McConaughey Developing Free State Of Jones With Gary Ross

November 6, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

matthew-mcconaughey-magic-mikeMatthew McConaughey may defend his previous life as king of lazy rom-coms, but most people would agree that the more picky McConaughey of recent years is a far better proposition. The actor is continuing his run of interesting projects by getting on board to star in Free State Of Jones, according to Deadline.

The film is based ‘based on the untold and extraordinary story of Newton Knight, the leader of one of the greatest rebellions in Civil War history… McConaughey is in talks to play the Mississippian, who defected from the Confederate Army, banded together with a group of like-minded soldiers, and set out to form their own State known as the Free State Of Jones.’

Knight is seen by some as a hero and by others as an outlaw, however it seems clear he really didn’t believe in the Confederacy’s attempts to retain slavery, as he eventually married a former slave himself, which was one of the first mixed race marriages in Mississippi after the Civil War.

The hope is to get backing for the film so that it can shoot at the beginning on 2015.

Ewan McGregor, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal & More On The Doctor Strange Shortlist

October 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ewan-mcgregorA couple of months ago it seemed Marvel has sewn up the casting of Doctor Strange with Joaquin Phoenix in talks for the role. However he passed on the role and so the studio has been on the lookout again.

Variety is now reporting that Marvel has a shortlist of the people they may want, with some suggesting Ewan McGregor is now the frontrunner, with Ethan Hawke, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Oscar Isaac, and Jared Leto also in the mix.

While the list ranges from big names to those still rising up the ladder, it’s suggested Marvel would prefer a well-known name to lead the film, presumably because of concerns about lacking of recognition for the character.

However all of the them could fit the bill, as even Oscar Isaac is likely to be a much bigger name than he is now after Star Wars Episode VII. It’s thought McConaughey may be too big a name and too busy, unless he really wants to join the Marvel universe, while Gyllenhaal has a very mixed record in big films.

Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Scott Derrickson is set to direct, with a July 8th, 2016 release date set.
