Oscar Isaac Will Be X-Men: Apocalypse’s Title Villain

November 24, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

oscar-isaacThe people who are annoyed that Ridley Scott’s Exodus has a cast largely made up of white people – despite being about ancient Egyptians and Israelites – probably won’t like this, but X-Men: Apocalypse has found its Middle Eastern born villain in the form of the Guatemalan born Oscar Isaac. Buy hey, perhaps Jordan was mainly populated by Hispanic people 5,000 years ago.

THR confirms that it’s Oscar who will play Apocalypse in the film (the character was briefly seen at the end of Days Of Future Past, but it wasn’t confirmed who would play him in the next film). He is one of first mutants and has all sorts of powers emanating from the fact he can control all the molecules in his body – meaning he can shape-shift, has superhuman power, can interface with technology and his regeneration abilities have allowed him to live for millennia. At least that’s in the comics and presumably he will be the same in the movie.

X-Men: Apocalypse is set in the 1980s and renunites Michael Fassbender as Magneto, James McAvoy as Professor X and Jennifer Lawrence as Mystique, who must go up against one of the most powerful mutants there has ever been. As we recently reported, director Bryan Singer is currently looking for young versions of Cyclops and Jean Grey, with some wondering whether the latter will play a vital role in Apocalypse, considering her own potentially apocalyptic powers.

The movie shoots early next year for a summer 2016 release.

Ex_Machina Trailer – Plus a poster for Alex Garland’s film

October 31, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ex-machina-quadAlex Garland had a massive success with his novel The Beach, and since then he’s done a great job moving into screenplay with the likes of 28 Days Later…, Sunshine, Never Let Me Go and Dredd.

Now he’s turning director with Ex_Machine, which has just released its international poster and trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘EX_MACHINA is an intense psychological thriller in which Caleb (Domhnall Gleeson), a 24 year old coder at the world’s largest internet company, wins a competition to spend a week at a retreat belonging to the company’s reclusive CEO, Nathan (Oscar Isaac). But when Caleb arrives he finds that he will have to participate in a fascinating experiment with the world’s first true artificial intelligence, housed in the body of a beautiful robot woman, Ava (Alicia Vikander). Truths, emotions and motives are blurred as the relationship between Caleb, Ava and Nathan intensifies.’

A January 23rd, 2015 UK release has been set. [Read more…]

Ewan McGregor, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal & More On The Doctor Strange Shortlist

October 15, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ewan-mcgregorA couple of months ago it seemed Marvel has sewn up the casting of Doctor Strange with Joaquin Phoenix in talks for the role. However he passed on the role and so the studio has been on the lookout again.

Variety is now reporting that Marvel has a shortlist of the people they may want, with some suggesting Ewan McGregor is now the frontrunner, with Ethan Hawke, Matthew McConaughey, Jake Gyllenhaal, Oscar Isaac, and Jared Leto also in the mix.

While the list ranges from big names to those still rising up the ladder, it’s suggested Marvel would prefer a well-known name to lead the film, presumably because of concerns about lacking of recognition for the character.

However all of the them could fit the bill, as even Oscar Isaac is likely to be a much bigger name than he is now after Star Wars Episode VII. It’s thought McConaughey may be too big a name and too busy, unless he really wants to join the Marvel universe, while Gyllenhaal has a very mixed record in big films.

Doctor Strange is a former neurosurgeon, a practicing sorcerer, and serves as the Sorcerer Supreme, the primary protector of Earth against magical and mystical threats. Scott Derrickson is set to direct, with a July 8th, 2016 release date set.

Inside Llewyn Davis (Blu-ray Review)

May 27, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Oscar Isaac, Carey Mulligan, Justin Timberlake
Director: Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
Running Time: 104 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: May 26th 2014 (UK)

It just goes to show how useful it is to have a ‘name’ in the film world. If most filmmakers had said they wanted to make a movie about a misanthropic 1960s folk singer who spends the first 25 minutes of the film trying to get a cat back to its owner, they’d have been laughed out of the room. However the Coen Brothers have the sort of clout that can get things done.

And while not one of their best, Inside Llewyn Davis is not a bad movie at all. [Read more…]

The Star Wars Episode VII Cast Is Announced, Including John Boyega, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis & Domhnall Gleeson

April 29, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

star-wars-episode-vii-script-readingJJ Abrams has been keeping very quiet about the cast for Star Wars Episode VII, but with the shoot starting to gear up and the likes of Harrison Ford, Mark Hamill & Carrie Fisher seen in London, many presumed we’d find out who would be in the film on Star Wars Day, May 4th.

However it’s come sooner that that with Lucasfilm & Disney issuing the following release: ‘The Star Wars team is thrilled to announce the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII.

‘Actors John Boyega, Daisy Ridley, Adam Driver, Oscar Isaac, Andy Serkis, Domhnall Gleeson and Max von Sydow will join the original stars of the saga, Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, Mark Hamill, Anthony Daniels, Peter Mayhew and Kenny Baker in the new film.

‘Director J.J. Abrams says, “We are so excited to finally share the cast of Star Wars: Episode VII. It is both thrilling and surreal to watch the beloved original cast and these brilliant new performers come together to bring this world to life, once again. We start shooting in a couple of weeks, and everyone is doing their best to make the fans proud.”

‘Star Wars: Episode VII is being directed by J.J. Abrams from a screenplay by Lawrence Kasdan and Abrams. Kathleen Kennedy, J.J. Abrams, and Bryan Burk are producing, and John Williams returns as the composer. The movie opens worldwide on December 18, 2015.’

There’s no news on who the new cast will play, although it’s believed Attack The Block’s Boyega will be a Jedi apprentice, while Girls’ Adam Driver is one of the main villains. It’s a fair bet that Andy Serkis will be playing a motion capture character, but it’s less clear what Inside Llewyn Davis’ Oscar Isaac, About Time’s Domhnall Gleeson or relative newcomer Daisy Ridley will be doing.

Along with the release came the pick above from a cast script reading.

Two Faces Of January Trailer – Plus a poster for the Viggo Mortensen movie

February 10, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

The first trailer and poster for Two Faces Of January has arrived, which you can take a look at here.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘1962. A glamorous American couple, the charismatic CHESTER MACFARLAND (Viggo Mortensen) and his alluring younger wife COLETTE (Kirsten Dunst), are in Athens during a European vacation. While sightseeing at the Acropolis they encounter RYDAL (Oscar Isaac), a young, Greek-speaking American who is working as a tour guide, scamming female tourists on the side. Drawn to Colette’s beauty and impressed by Chester’s wealth and sophistication, Rydal gladly accepts their invitation to dinner.

‘All is not as it seems with the MacFarlands, Chester’s affable exterior hides darker secrets. When Rydal visits the couple at their exclusive hotel, Chester presses him to help move the body of a seemingly unconscious man who he claims attacked him. In the heat of the moment, Rydal agrees but as events take a more sinister turn he finds himself compromised and unable to pull himself free. His increasing infatuation with the vulnerable and responsive Colette gives rise to Chester’s jealousy and paranoia, leading to a tense and dangerous battle of wits between the two men. Their journey takes them from Greece to Turkey, and to a dramatic finale played out in the back alleys of Istanbul’s Grand Bazaar.’

The movie is out in UK cinemas on May 16th. [Read more…]
