Mortdecai (Blu-ray Review)

June 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Paul Bettany, Ewan McGregor
Director: David Koepp
Running Time: 107 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: June 8th 2015 (UK)

While some films get bad reviews, few movies with big name actors get excoriated like Mortdecai did on its cinema release. The film was greeted with some exceptionally scathing notices, but while you can understand some of the points those reviewers were making, the fact is it’s not half as bad as they made out.

Johnny Depp is Lord Charles Mortdecai, a British art dealer with an aristocratic background and penchant for shady shenanigans. He and his wife, Johanna (Gwyneth Paltrow), owe £8 million in back taxes and don’t have much time to raise it, although a possible lifeline arrives following the death of an art dealer and the discovery that a legendary painting by Goya may have been stolen from her. Paul Rudd & Paul Bettany Join Captain America: Civil War As Production Begins

May 7, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ant-man-paul-rudd-shirtlessCaptain America: Civil War is increasingly turning into and Avengers movie in all but name, as while it will lack a few of the throng, such as Thor and Hulk, it’s got Iron Man and Scarlet Widow, and now it’s been confirmed it will also have The Vision (Paul Bettany), Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner), and James ‘War Machine’ Rhodes (Don Cheadle).

To many people’s surprise, after making his Marvel Universe debut later this year in Ant-Man, Paul Rudd will also be in the new Cap film.

And while Marvel has largely ignored 2008’s The Incredible Hulk despite it being technically part of their filmic universe (even if it did have a different actor in the main role), it’s now bringing back one of that movie’s characters, William Hurt’s General Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross.

The info was included in a press release announcing the start of production, which also included the following synopsis, ‘“Captain America: Civil War” picks up where “Avengers: Age of Ultron” left off, as Steve Rogers leads the new team of Avengers in their continued efforts to safeguard humanity. After another international incident involving the Avengers results in collateral damage, political pressure mounts to install a system of accountability and a governing body to determine when to enlist the services of the team. The new status quo fractures the Avengers while they try to protect the world from a new and nefarious villain.’

As that suggests, the movie will shake things up, with the fallout being seen in Avengers: Infinity War.

What isn’t known yet is who will play another character we’ve been promised for the movie, Spider-man, but presumably we’ll find out who’s playing the role very soon.

Crush Of The Day: The Stars Turn Out For The Avengers: Age Of Ultron World Premiere

April 14, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-premiere-slideThe stars of Marvel were out in force for the LA World Premiere of Avengers: Age Of Ultron, and as you’d expect the likes of Chris Evans, Robert Downey Jr., Chris Hemsworth and Jeremy Renner had their best threads on as they strutted down Hollywood Boulevard, and we’ve got the pics to prove it.

It was a bit of an early World Premiere as the film isn’t out in the US until May 1st, but the stars are off on a world tour to promote the film before its international release on April 23rd, and so the US premiere has already taken place.

As well as the stars mentioned above, Avengers actors such as Mark Ruffalo, James Spader, Scarlett Johansson, Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Elizabeth Olsen, Cobie Smulders, Samuel L. Jackson, Paul Bettany and Anthony Mackie were also on hand, as were stars from the wider Marvel world, such as Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D’s Clark Gregg and Brett Dalton, and Ant-Man’s Paul Rudd.

Take a look at the action from the red carpet below. [Read more…]

Paul Bettany’s Vision Finally Gets An Avengers: Age Of Ultron Poster

April 9, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-vision-bannerSeveral weeks ago a slew of posters were released featuring the main characters from Avengers: Age Of Ultron, from Aaron Taylor-Johnson’s Quicksilver to Robert Downey Jr’s Iron Man. However one character was missing – Paul Bettany’s vision.

Marvel has now remedied that with a great poster featuring Paul Bettany’s slightly creepy-looking character in the movie.

Not too much is known about how the character plays into the film, although it is known Vision is creating the J.A.R.V.I.S. technology which Bettany has voiced in earlier Marvel movie. There will definitely be problems with that though, as the  Ultron also emerges when Tony Stark’s plans to use technology to create guardians who will protect the world when the superheroes aren’t available goes horribly wrong. It would seem reasonable to assume Ultron and Vision are two sides of the same idea.

Indeed recent reports suggest Vision is created when the robotic Ultron goes rogue and tries to destroy J.A.R.V.I.S., but accidentally gives birth to something unexpected.

New Avengers: Age Of Ultron Trailer Hits – Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans & co. are back

I think Marvel are keen for us to know that Avengers: Age Of Ultron won’t be short on action, as they’ve released a trailer that seems to want to suggest the Battle Of New York was a bit wimpy compared to what they have in store.

You can take a look at it before, along with new character banners for Captain America and Hawkeye above (you can see the other recent character banners for the movie here and here).

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. When Tony Stark tries to jumpstart a dormant peacekeeping program, things go awry and Earth’s Mightiest Heroes, including Iron Man, Captain America, Thor, The Incredible Hulk, Black Widow and Hawkeye, are put to the ultimate test as the fate of the planet hangs in the balance. As the villainous Ultron emerges, it is up to The Avengers to stop him from enacting his terrible plans, and soon uneasy alliances and unexpected action pave the way for an epic and unique global adventure.

Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” stars Robert Downey Jr., who returns as Iron Man, along with Chris Evans as Captain America, Chris Hemsworth as Thor and Mark Ruffalo as The Hulk. Together with Scarlett Johansson as Black Widow and Jeremy Renner as Hawkeye, and with the additional support of Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury and Cobie Smulders as Agent Maria Hill, the team must reassemble to defeat James Spader as Ultron, a terrifying technological villain hell-bent on human extinction. Along the way, they confront two mysterious and powerful newcomers, Wanda Maximoff, played by Elizabeth Olsen, and Pietro Maximoff, played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson, and meet an old friend in a new form when Paul Bettany becomes Vision. Written and directed by Joss Whedon and produced by Kevin Feige, Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” is based on the ever-popular Marvel comic book series “The Avengers,” first published in 1963. Get set for an action-packed thrill ride when The Avengers return in Marvel’s “Avengers: Age of Ultron” on April 23rd, 2015.’ [Read more…]

New Avengers: Age Of Ultron Trailer – Thor, Hulk, Iron Man & Co. Up The Action

January 13, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-poster1-slideThe new trailer for Avengers: Age Of Ultron may start out fairly quietly, but by the end of its running time it’s certainly upped the action, with plenty of explosions, fighting and perhaps most excitingly for fans, some hulkbusting.

Paul Bettany Schools Anti-Gay Twitter Troll On Their Idiocy

November 17, 2014 By Tim Isaac 13 Comments

paul-bettanyThere are plenty of good things about being a Hollywood celeb, but there are also plenty of downsides, not least of which is the abuse you get just for existing and being a nexus for trolls to gather. Paul Bettany is not immune to trolls, but it turns out he does have a pretty epic way of dealing with them, as evidenced by a tweet he published a few days ago and which you can see below.

Despite the fact he’s married to Jennifer Connelly and has kids with her, it appears that news hasn’t reached everyone, including one person who sent him the disjointed message, ‘Your a faggot pussy I would beat your fucking ass if i ever see you in real life. Faggot.’

Not willing to let that stand, Bettany decided to fight back.

Bettany wrote, ‘Dear Travis, Thank you so much for your message. I have a few thoughts – I think you mean you’re as in you are a faggot pussy not ‘‘your’’, which seems to suggest I have a faggot pussy. Also a comma after “pussy” would really help the clarity of the sentence. Lastly, you are mixing up your tenses “would and see” – I think you mean that you would beat my fucking ass if you ever saw me in real life or you will beat my fucking ass (why so much focus on my ass? Something you’d like to get off your chest?) if you ever see me in real life. Sorry for all the notes but I was a little confused. Hugs and kisses, Paul Bettany.’

And with that the actor won the Internet, not just completely ignoring the idea that being called a ‘faggot’ is meant to be an insult, but showing just what sort of insecure morons many trolls are. [Read more…]

November 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mortdecai-poster1-slideJohnny Depp hasn’t given up on looking eccentric in his movies, as with Mortdecai he gets a little crazy-eyed and dons as much moustache as he can handle.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Juggling some angry Russians, the British Mi5, his impossibly leggy wife and an international terrorist, debonair art dealer and part time rogue Charlie Mortdecai (Johnny Depp) must traverse the globe armed only with his good looks and special charm in a race to recover a stolen painting rumored to contain the code to a lost bank account filled with Nazi gold.

‘MORTDECAI is directed by David Koepp and stars Johnny Depp, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ewan McGregor, Olivia Munn, Jeff Goldblum and Paul Bettany.

‘MORTDECAI is released in UK cinemas on January 30th 2015.’

Avengers: Age of Ultron Extended Trailer – Take a look at more from the superheroes

November 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-chris-hemsworth-shirtlessA few weeks ago we got our first look at Avengers: Age Of Ultron with a trailer. Now a new extended version has arrived, giving us a little bit more of the movie, including more interaction between our heroes.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Marvel Studios presents “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” the epic follow-up to the biggest Super Hero movie of all time. Avengers: Age Of Utron Teaser Trailer – Heroes old and new unite

October 23, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

avengers-age-of-ultron-poster1We weren’t meant to get the Avengers: Age Of Utron teaser until next week, but after the trailer leaked Marvel quickly decided that rather than trying to put the genie back in the bottle they’d go with it and release official versions.

It’s certainly a big one, offering a great look at the movie, including new heroes such as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, along with plenty of creepily robotic bad guys and an Iron Man who looks like tank. It also suggests things won’t go well for everyone, and that even an adamantium shield may not protect you.

And and keep an eye out for this shot:
