The Gunman International Trailer – Sean Penn is an assassin in trouble

January 20, 2015 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gunman-uk-posterSean Penn is known for being picky and a bit idiosyncratic with his movie roles, generally avoiding typical Hollywood fare, but there’s no doubt The Gunman doesn’t sound like anything particularly unusual. Let’s hope the great cast – which includes Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone and Mark Rylance – can raise it above the generic.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘In THE GUNMAN, directed by Pierre Morel, Sean Penn stars as a former Special Forces soldier and military contractor suffering from PTSD. He tries to reconnect with his long time love, but first must go on the run from London to Barcelona and across Europe in order to clear his name.’

The suggestion of PTSD may explain what attract Penn, allowing him to stretch his acting muscles more than most assassin tales.

The Gunman hits UK cinemas on 20th March. [Read more…]

The Gunman Trailer – Sean Penn turns assassin but gets targeted himself

December 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

gunman-sean-pennThe Gunman certainly has a great cast, led by Sean Penn alongside Javier Bardem, Idris Elba, Ray Winstone and Mark Rylance. Indeed getting such a cast of luminaries together is surprising as the plot makes it sound like pretty standard stuff – hopefully the film itself will offer something more.

Pierre Morel (Taken) directs based on the novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Deadly professional assassin Martin Terrier returns to Paris after his latest job determined to get out of the game. Ten years ago he made a promise to return to his childhood sweetheart in the south of France. But circumstances put Martin’s attempted retirement on hold: a key target is flying in to Paris, and there is only one man fit for the task of eliminating him. As Martin flees southwards, desperate to return to the crushing mediocrity of life in a backwater town, he finds his former employers will stop at nothing to regain his services for one last job. Bursting with Gallic irony and visceral brutality, The Gunman (originally published in English as The Prone Gunman) is a shocking and sardonic masterpiece from the late, great master of the French crime novel, J-P Manchette.’

A February 20th UK release is set, and it’ll arrive in the US March 30th. [Read more…]

New Noah Trailer – With added Emma Watson intro

March 11, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

)
A lot of the coverage of Noah has centred around Paramount’s difficulties promoting it to a religious audience, due to the fact it’s not the comfy, cost biblical movie they might have been expecting (although in some respects it’s actually closer to the Bible than some Christians would like, but they’d prefer to edit out the bits that they don’t like – and for many if they haven’t heard it in church, it doesn’t exist).

It’s only a few weeks until we all get to see what the fuss is about, and now a new trailer has arrived, which starts with an Emma Watson introduction before blasting us with flood related action.

Directed by Darren Aronofsky, and featuring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Ray Winstone, Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins and Logan Lerman, Noah is set for UK release on 4 April 2014, with the US release a week earlier. [Read more…]

Russell Crowe, Logan Lerman & More Get Noah Character Posters

February 12, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Noah-character-poster3
It hasn’t been a smooth road to the big screen for Darren Arnofsky’s Noah. It took him years to get backing for the movie and it seems even after the gave it the greenlight, Paramount has still been a little nervous, particularly trying to ensure Christians – who could be a massive audience for the movie – would like this idiosyncratic take on the bible story.

Now four character posters for the film have been released – featuring Russell Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Logan Leman and Ray Winston – and Aronofsky has been talking to THR about the difficult he had with test screenings.

Paramount showed various versions to all sorts of Christian groups, who made some suggestions for changes. The director was against holding these tests in the first place and says, “I was upset — of course. No one’s ever done that to me. There was a rough patch. I imagine if I made comedies and horror films, it would be helpful. In dramas, it’s very, very hard to do. I’ve never been open to it.”

However the studio eventually went with Darren Aronofsky’s own version. He comments, “I’m a great closer. I’ve never reshot a frame, and I think that’s very odd on big-budget movies. We’re meticulous. We come from independent film, with limited resources. They tried what they wanted to try, and eventually they came back. My version of the film hasn’t been tested… It’s what we wrote and what was greenlighted.”

As for whether it’s true to the Bible of he, he comments, “I had no problem completely honoring and respecting everything in the Bible and accepting it as truth. Of course, my production designer [Mark Friedberg] had a million ideas of what it could look like, but I said, ‘No, the measurements are right there.’ We wanted to smash expectations of who Noah is. The first thing I told Russell is, ‘I will never shoot you on a houseboat with two giraffes behind you.’ … You’re going to see Russell Crowe as a superhero, a guy who has this incredibly difficult challenge put in front of him and has to overcome it.”

Emma Thompson Up For Robert Carlyle’s Long Midnight of Barney Thomson

February 3, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Emma-ThompsonTrainspotting, Full Monty and Once Upon A Time’s Robert Carlyle is putting together his directorial debut, and he’s snagged a great actress to take one of the roles, as Variety reports Emma Thompson has joined The Long Midnight of Barney Thomson.

Carlyle will play the title role, a troubled Scottish barber who finds himself involved up in a serial murder case. Emma Thompson will play Robert Carlyle’s mother (despite the fact in real life she’s only two year older than him), who loves to emasculate him at every turn. Ray Winstone and Ewen Bremner are also attached to co-star in supporting roles.

Richard Cowan and Colin McLaren wrote the script, based on a series of novels by author Douglas Lindsay.

The film is currently being sold at the European Film Market in Berlin, with filming set to start later this year.

Noah Super Bowl Spot – The flood is coming for Russell Crowe

January 31, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It’s been reported that there will be fewer Super Bowl TV spots for movies this year, but one of the films that’s getting one is Noah, and they’ve certainly ensured it look pretty epic. It also gives us a peek at the films tweaked animals and the angels that will play a role in the movie.

The film follows Noah (Russell Crowe), who lives on a vast plain of volcanic ash in the lee of a volcanic glacier (the movie was largely shot in Iceland) and has to trek up a mountain every day to get to work. He is told by God to build an enormous vessel to house both his family and the animals of the world to preserve them from a flood that promises to wipe out a sin-filled world.

It’s currently due for release on March 28th, 2014. [Read more…]

Noah Trailer – Russell Crowe, Douglas Booth & Logan Lerman are gonna need a bigger boat

November 14, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Yesterday we had the first poster for Noah, and now it’s time for the trailer, which starts off looking a bit weird, before it gets a whole lot more epic with giant boats, loads of CGI animals and a massive, is slightly backwards flood (where the water comes up from the ground rather than falling from the sky).

Here’s the brief official synopsis: ‘Academy Award® winner Russell Crowe stars as Noah, a man chosen by God for a great task before an apocalyptic flood destroys the world.’

Emma Watson, Jennifer Connolly, Ray Winstone and Anthony Hopkins co-star. And who knew Noah had such hot sons, with Logan Lerman and Douglas Booth as Shem and Ham? Darren Aronofsky’s film is due out March 28th 2014. [Read more…]

New Pics From Darren Aronofsky’s Noah Suggest A Different Type Of Biblical Epic

August 20, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

noah-pic4
It would have been a surprise if Darren Aronofsky made a biblical epic and it turned out to be generic Hollywood action. And if these new pics are any indication, this will be a rather different type of movie, taking the story of Noah and giving it a more naturalistic feel than most Biblical movies (if we ignore that the film thinks everyone living in the Middle East thousands of years ago was white).

The film follows Noah (Russell Crowe), who lives on a vast plain of volcanic ash in the lee of a volcanic glacier (the movie’s being shot in Iceland) and has to trek up a mountain every day to get to work. He is told by God to build an enormous vessel to house both his family and the animals of the world to preserve them from a flood that promises to wipe out a sin-filled world. It’s currently due for release on March 28th, 2014.

While the film hasn’t had much mainstream marketing yet, Paramount is already courting faith organisations in the US, hoping they will turn out in droves for the movie. It’s currently due for release on March 28th, 2014.

Ray Winstone Up To Sean Penn, Javier Bardem and Idris Elba In The Gunman

June 17, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

ray-winstoneOn Friday we reported that Idris Elba is in talks to join Sean Penn and Javier Bardem in the thriller The Gunman. Now another Brit may sign up, as Deadline reports that Ray Winstone is likely to be part of the cast, as is Italian actress Jasmine Trinca.

The Gunman is based on a novel by Jean-Patrick Manchette. It follows an international operative (Penn) who is betrayed by his handlers and goes on the run. Winstone is set to play one of those handlers, who’s been Penn’s mentor up to that point. It isn’t known who Trinca will play.

No specifics have been released about Bardem’s role, although it’s presumed he’ll be the villain. Elba meanwhile is up to play a mysterious operative called Dupont, although it’s not clear if he’s working with or against Penn.

Pierre Morel (Taken) is set to direct from a script by Pete Travis. Shooting is slated to begin in Barcelona and other European locations later this month.
