Studios know that at the moment it’s an uphill struggle to sell movies that aren’t a sequel or based on a known property. As a result Fox is really pushing This Means War, with things like Valentine’s Sneak Peaks and now a nine-minute preview popping up online, so you can get a really good feel for the movie, which stars Tom Hardy, Chris Pine and Reese Witherspoon. Here’s the synopsis: ‘The world’s deadliest CIA operatives are inseparable partners and best friends until they fall for the same woman. Having once helped bring down entire enemy nations, they are now employing their incomparable skills and an endless array of high-tech gadgetry against their greatest nemesis ever – each other.’ It hits cinemas March 2nd, when we’ll find out if audiences respond to Fox’s efforts to get people excited about the film.
Reese Witherspoon & Ryan Reynolds Team For Art Biopic Big Eyes
Ryan Reynolds and Reese Witherspoon could be a good on-screen pairing. The duo have now signed to star together in Big Eyes for producer Tim Burton and writer/directors Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski, according to THR.
The movie is based on the fascinating true story of artists Margaret Keane and Walter Keane, whose bizarre paintings featuring large eyed characters were beloved across the world in the 1960s. However, Margaret later claimed she was the true artist behind all the big-eyed paintings, and that the rather pompous and self-obsessed Walter (who spoke about himself in the third person and compared himself to Rembrandt and El Greco) stole all the credit for her work. It set off a long running dispute between the two which ended in court battles.
Here’s what Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski had to say about the casting, “We are ecstatic to have this dream cast for our dream project. Walter is a larger-than-life antihero – charming, funny, dangerous, and a little crazy. Ryan will knock it out of the park. As for Reese, she will be perfect as Margaret – soulful, decent, transforming from vulnerability to learning to fight for herself.”
Production is scheduled to begin sometime this spring.
Reese Witherspoon Joins Devil’s Knot
Almost the moment the West Memphis 3 got out of prison, it was announced that Atom Egoyan was plotting a movie about the infamous case. Now things have moved forward as Variety reports actress Reese Witherspoon has joined the cast of Devil’s Knot, marking the first piece of what promises to be a large casting puzzle. After the case became a bit of a cause celebre in Hollywood, it’ll be interesting to see if the films ends up with an all-star line-up.
Witherspoon will play Pam Hobbs, the mother of a West Memphis 3 murder victim, who initially believes three young men committed the crime, but eventually is persuaded that they are innocent. In case you don’t know, the West Memphis 3 were convicted of the murder of three young boys in Arkansas in the mid 90s.
However even before they were convicted there were accusations of the investigation being bungled and the men being railroaded. The youths were accused of murdering the boys in a Satanic ritual, with many supecting they had just been caught up in a panic over Satanism that was sweeping the US (and other parts of the world) at the time, with the evidence made to fit what the prosecutors wanted it to, rather than what it did. After years of campaigning, high-profile documentaries (particularly Paradise Lost and its sequel, which had a huge impact on the case), the three men were finally released – although it should be noted that it was part of a plea deal and they weren’t exonerated.
Atom Egoyan is directing from a screenplay by Paul Harris Boardman and Scott Derrickson, which is adapted from Mara Leveritt’s 2003 non-fiction book. The project is seeking independent financing, with production slated to begin this coming summer.

Reese Witherspoon May Star In Rule 1
It seems Reese Witherspoon has lined another movie up, as while she’s only down to produce at the moment, the idea is they’ll shape Rule #1 into a movie for her to start in. Cinema Blend has the news and says they’ve already found a director for the movie, with Courtney Hunt (Frozen River) down to helm.
The film will see Witherspoon ‘play 34-year-old Diana McBride, a woman coping with her OCD who agrees to take in an unpredictable young stranger – who happens to have a newborn baby – in an effort to face her anxieties. Ultimately, McBride’s plan is to win back her estranged husband by convincing him she can handle her chaotic existence.’
Sounds a bit like she’s angling for another Oscar, which might not be a bad plan, as she hasn’t exactly had a huge amount of luck since Walk The Line. There’s no news on when the film might shoot.
