There was plenty of eye-rolling when it was announced a new version of Shakespeare’s Romeo & Juliet was in the works. Many asked whether after Franco Zeferelli and Baz Luhrmann’s versions, we needed another take. However in my opinion there’s no real problem with doing Romeo & Juliet on film again – but you do need to bring something new to the party, or at least do the old stuff so well it’s riveting in its own right. Romeo And Juliet is one of the most popular tales to adapt in the history of cinema. From the silent era onwards we’ve had a string of films based on Shakespeare’s play, the latest of which will hit cinemas this autumn, with Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth as the star-crossed lovers.
Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti, Ed Westwick, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Stellan Skarsgard also stars. The film was shot quite a while, but it’s only now it’s preparing for release.
A new trailer and poster have now been released, which lays the period renaissance detail and Shakespearean language on thick. It’s certainly going to be pretty, but it remains to be seen whether, after the likes of Franco Zeferelli and Baz Luhrmann’s versions, we really need another Romeo And Juliet. [Read more…]
Do we need another movie version of Romeo and Juliet? Well, director Carlo Carlei obviously thinks so as he’s helmed a new version starring Hailee Steinfeld, Douglas Booth, Damian Lewis, Paul Giamatti, Ed Westwick, Kodi Smit-McPhee and Stellan Skarsgard.
The film was show quite a few months ago, but it’s only now we’re getting to see the first trailer, which lays the period renaissance detail and Shakespearean language on thick. It’s certainly going to be pretty (and not just because Douglas Booth is in it), but it remains to be seen whether, after Franco Zeferelli and Baz Luhrmann’s versions, we really need another one now.
The film will be out in the UK on July 26th.
We haven’t heard much about the planned new live-action version of Romeo & Juliet for a while. Earlier reports suggested the movie would film last summer, but that obviously didn’t happen. However things are still moving forward as Variety reports that Paul Giamatti has joined the cast of Carlo Carlei’s take on Shakespeare’s play.
The actor will play Friar Lawrence, who serves as an adviser to the title characters (Hailee Steinfeld and Douglas Booth). Holly Hunter is set to portray Nurse, while Ed Westwick and Kodi Smit-McPhee play cousins Tybalt and Mercutio.
Carlo Carlei is directing Romeo and Juliet from a screenplay by Julian Fellowes. The project is described as Romeo and Juliet for the Twilight generation. Production is scheduled to start later this month on location in Mantua Italy and Rome’s Cinecitta Studios.
