I’m sure the Daily Express is up in arms today, as it’s been announced that Naomi Watts – who’s an Aussie but was actually born in Britain – will play the role of Princess Diana in the upcoming movie Caught in Flight.
Directed by Oliver Hirschbiegel ( Downfall), and based on the screenplay by Stephen Jeffreys, production will begin in the UK later this year. Caught in Flight will look at Diana during the last two years of her life. It charts how finding true personal happiness for the first time allowed her to achieve her defining successes evolving into a major international campaigner and humanitarian. So basically it sounds like it’s going to continue the attempts to turn her into a saint.
Naomi Watts comments “It is such an honor to be able to play this iconic role – Princess Diana was loved across the world, and I look forward to rising to the challenge of playing her on screen.”
Jessica Chastain is one of the best actresses to have emerged in the past few years and one of the few who might be able to take on playing Princess Diana and turn her into a real person, rather than a cararicature based on her idealised reputation since her death.
