Brad Pitt Is Hoping To Get David Fincher To Direct World War Z Sequel

August 11, 2016 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

david-fincher-brad-pittAfter World War Z became a surprise hit (particularly surprising as it had a tortuous production, with much of it needing to be reshot), Paramount was keen to get a sequel made. However that’s proven difficult too, not least because the chosen director, Juan Antonio Bayona, dropped out after being attached to the project for a long time.

Now it seems star/producer has decided who he wants replace the departed Bayona, and he’s aiming high, as his Se7en, Fight Club and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button director David Fincher is in talks for the role. It would be surprising if Fincher does sign on, not least because it’s known he’s wary of sequels, partly because of his experience making Alien3, which ended with him being locked out of the editing room.

However, it seems that talks that were initially lukewarm are now heating up, according to Variety. Fincher’s interest may be due to the fact it’s known he’s interested in making a big, blockbuster type movie, but previous summer tentpole-style projects he’s been attached to have never made out of the starting gate (such as the version of 20,000 Leagues Under The Sea he was long attached to).

If he does sign on, he’ll be taking Pitt back to a world where zombies are running riot, and the few human survivors are struggling to survive and maintain some semblance on civilisation. The movie was originally supposed to be in cinemas June 2017, but it’s expected to be delayed.

Eastern Promises’ Steven Knight To Write World War Z Sequel

May 30, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

world-war-z-slideAfter World War Z ended up being a bigger hit than most had expected (especially considering the production troubles the film faced), Paramount quickly announced a sequel. However it’s coming together fairly slowly, but not it’s been announced that Steven Knight will write the screenplay, according to Variety.

Brad Pitt is set to reprise his role as United Nations employee Gerry Lane who is helping to sort things out after a terrible zombie virus has infected much of the populace. Juan Antonio Bayona, best known for The Impossible and The Orphanage, will direct.

At the moment no plot details are known.

Steven Knight is best known for writing Eastern Promises, as well as directing the recent Tom Hardy movie Locke.

2013’s World War Z grossed $540 million at the global box office, and is currently Brad Pitt’s highest grossing movie ever.

The Impossible’s Juan Antonio Bayona To Helm World War Z Sequel

December 11, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Juan-Antonio-BayonaAfter the production problems World War Z faced – involving ballooning budgets and expensive reshoots – even Paramount was surprised when it became a $500 million grossing hit. The success ensured they wanted a sequel, but it was also clear from early on they didn’t want director Marc Forster – who many have blamed for the first film’s problems (and who reportedly had an extremely fractious relationship with Brad Pitt).

Now they’ve found the man they want to replace Forster for World War Z 2, as Spanish filmmaker Juan Antonio Bayona has signed on to direct World War Z 2, according to THR. Bayona s best known The Orphanage and last year’s The Impossible

Brad Pitt is set to reprise his role as U.N. employee Gerry Lane, although there’s no news on the exact plot, although it’s safe to assume it will continue to look at the aftermath of a zombie apocalypse. No writers are attached to the sequel yet, although it’s reported that Juan Antonio Bayona will oversee the writing process. The director was on a very short list of contenders just a few weeks back before landing the job.

Marc Forster Won’t Direct World War Z Sequel

October 3, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

world-war-z-teaser-pic7Going into the summer season, if you’d asked many pundits what they thought would be the biggest box office failure, a lot of people would have gone for World War Z ahead of actual disasters such as Lone Ranger. That was due to massive budget overruns and a disastrous shoot, which went so badly that the entire third act needed to be reshot.

In the end it was a pretty big hit, taking $530 million worldwide, but apparently that doesn’t mean director Marc Forster is gonna be back for the planned sequel, as THR reports he’s out. That’s perhaps not surprising considering reports that Forster was overwhelmed by the scale of the production and many of the film’s issues were down to him focussing so much on the art that the business side became chaos. There have also been suggestions that he and Brad Pitt ended up being barely able to communicate.

As for the sequel, which Pitt also produced, he says “We are talking about it. We are going to investigate a script. We have a lot of ideas we will cull from. Nobody is writing just yet, but we are compiling our ideas.”

It’s just that they’re compiling them with Forster.

World War Z Sequel Moving Forward, With Brad Pitt Likely To Return

June 25, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

world-war-z-teaser-pic1World War Z was always planned as a franchise, but with its troubled production history – including the final third having to be completely reshot – many thought it would be lucky to get past a first movie. However, with the movie taking $66 million at the US box office in its opening weekend (analysts had been predicting about $40 million), and over $100 million in the rest of the world, it’s a strong enough start for Paramount Pictures to reveal they’re already moving forward with a sequel.

The studio has not announced whether director Marc Forster will return for the follow-up, but star Brad Pitt will likely return as U.N. employee Gerry Lane, who tries to track down the origins of a worldwide plague in World War Z. The actor revealed last week that he thinks there are plenty more stories from Max Brooks’ original novel to use for a sequel. With reports of trouble between Forster and Pitt, don’t be surprised if a new director is brought in for the sequel.

It’s very early days at the moment, and no writers have been attached to the sequel as yet.
