The Maze Runner (Blu-ray Review)

February 8, 2015 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Dylan O'Brien, Kaya Scodelario, Will Poulter, Ki Hong Lee, Aml Ameen
Director: Wes Ball
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: February 9th 2015

After the success of The Hunger Games it’s not too surprising that Hollywood rushed to put similarly themed movies into production, such as Divergent and now The Maze Runner.  While nearly all the knock-offs of Twilight, and indeed Harry Potter, were pretty rubbish, The Maze Runner isn’t bad at all.

Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) wakes up in a metal cage that’s rising out of the ground. He has no idea who he is or how he got there but finds himself thrust into the strange world of The Glade, where every month for three years a new young man has arrived, also with no idea what they’re doing there. A society led by Gally (Will Poulter) has arisen, bound by rules supposed to keep them alive. [Read more…]

Bound (Blu-ray Review)

August 19, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

Starring: Jennifer Tilly, Gina Gershon, Joe Pantoliano
Director: Lilly Wachowski, Lana Wachowski
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: August 18th 2014 (UK)

Back before they were the directors of The Matrix and when Lana was known as Larry, The Wachowskis took the indie film world by storm with the stylish neo-noir Bound. Now the film has come to Blu-ray with a crisp HD print, which is perhaps a little duller than you might hope for a film where splashes of vivid colour are so important, but stills looks extremely good.

Corky (Gina Gershon) is an ex-con working as a handyman in an apartment when she meets the next door neighbours, the Mafia-linked Caesar (Joe Pantoliano) and his girlfriend Violet (Jennifer Tilly). The two women become lovers and hatch a plan to steal $2 million of the mob’s money that Caesar has in their possession. While they think they have everything planned out, the scheme starts to go awry when Caesar doesn’t act as expected. [Read more…]

American Pie: Reunion (DVD)

September 7, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Jason Biggs, Seann William Scott, Chris Klein, Alyson Hannigan, Thomas Ian Nicholas
Director: Jon Hurwitz, Hayden Schlossberg
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 15
Release Date: September 10th 2012

It’s nine years since we last caught up with the original American Pie gang. Since then we’ve had four straight-to-DVD titles that threatened to make the Pie name as dodgy as National Lampoon’s has become in the last couple of decades. However now they’ve managed to get pretty much all of the main Pie actors back, as well as most of the minor ones, with the likes of the Sherminator popping up for cameos.

While the gang have gone their separate ways, they all head back to East Great Falls for a reunion. Getting back together causes everyone to take stock of their lives and reminisce on the differences between who they’ve become and who they thought they’d be. Jim (Jason Biggs) is still married to Michelle (Alyson Hannigan) and they have a young kid together, but are having difficulty finding time to make love. [Read more…]

Dolphin Tale (DVD)

February 12, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Nathan Gamble, Harry Connick Jr., Ashley Judd, Kris Kristofferson, Morgan Freeman
Director: Charles Martin Smith
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: PG
Release Date: February 13th, 2012

Based on a true story (loosely at least), Dolphin Tale is about a slightly lonely young boy (Nathan Gamble) who comes across a beached baby dolphin that’s managed to get its tale caught in a crab trap. After it’s rescued, the animal is taken to a marine hospital run by Dr. Clay Haskett (Harry Connick Jr.), who realises that the tale is too damaged to recover. While many vets would just put the dolphin down, he decides to amputate the tail and see if the animal, now dubbed Winter, will survive.

Nathan soon becomes Winter’s steadfast companion, and when it appears the dolphin’s lack of a tail could cause permanent nerve damage that will inevitably lead to death, the boy is inspired by a tragedy that’s happened to a member of his family to enlist the help of Dr. Cameron McCarty, to do something that’s never been done before – make a prosthetic tail for a dolphin. Cell 211 (DVD)

January 9, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Luis Tosar, Alberto Ammann, Antonio Resines, Manuel Moron
Director: Daniel Monzon
Running Time: 108 mins
Certificate: 18
Release Date: January 9th, 2012

In principle, a prison is a great place to set a movie. By its very nature it’s a hotbed of tension, with different sides, agendas and emotions battling against one another. As many prison movies have shown though, because there’s so much going on in a jail it’s a place that’s often difficult to tame on screen, leading to films that are either too dumb, too unrealistic or too haphazardly hectic.

Cell 211 is a rare case of a prison flick that manages to keep control of everything, while weaving a complex narrative where the tension comes from the characters as much as the situation. Juan (Alberto Ammann) is a young man who’s got a job as a prison guard and is touring the jail the day before he’s due to start work. After getting knocked unconscious just as a prison riot break out, Juan is abandoned in the empty cell 211 when the guards make a run for it. [Read more…]
