Indoor Boys: Episodes 2&3 – Things get a little dramatic and catty in the gay web series

August 1, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

With its first episode (which you can watch here), Indoor Boys became a gay-themed web series to look out for. It was a realtively simple set-up – two roommates in their house, where there may or may not be something more between then than just friendship.

That continues with Episodes 2 and 3, although things are getting a little more dramatic. In the second instalment a spanner is thrown in the works, when Nate (Alex Wyse) sees his roomie Luke (Wesley Taylor) in his bed with a hunky man. And he’s not exactly impressed. Then, in Episode 2, how do you save a cat that might be dead soon without leaving your house? And will your roomie be impressed if they do?

It may be a little silly, but it certainly makes you want to find out what will happen next between Luke (Wesley Taylor) and Nate (Alex Wyse), even if they may be a little too co-dependent, and one of them is supposed to be leaving.

Take a look at Indoor Boys: Episodes 2 and 3 below. (And don’t forget to catch up with Episode 1 here) [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: In A Heartbeat – A sweet, gay love story gets animated

July 31, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Back in May, the trailer for In A Hearbeat got a lot of people excited for this Pixar-eque animated short about a sweet gay love story. At the time, filmmakers Esteban Bravo and Beth David from the Ringling College of Art commented, “Being gay is a subject that hasn’t been widely explored in computer animation. Nine out of ten LGBT youths have reported incidences of bullying based on their orientations and identities… We want to put out a message of love and self acceptance to all the kids and young people who struggle to identify as LGBT+”.

In the exceedingly sweet, charming and often quite witty short, ‘A closeted boy runs the risk of being outed by his own heart after it pops out of his chest to chase down the boy of his dreams.’

Gay Short Film Showcase: Always Love – Strong voices converge at New York City Pride

July 26, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Documentaries about interesting LGBT people are always worth a look, and that’s what the Always Love series provides. Two out of the three short docs have now been released online, looking at Hal Moskowitz and Joanna Fang, with a third focusing on Brigid McGinn, still to arrive.

As Huffpo notes, ‘On the surface, the individual stories couldn’t be more different. Moskowitz is a community organizer spurred to action when he started seeing friends succumb to a then-unnamed illness. Joanna Fang is a transwoman who finally finds herself comfortable in her own skin. And Brigid McGinn comes out later in life after being married and having four kids.’

The films see all three of them at the New York City Pride parade, demonstrating the wide diversity of events like that, which bring together disparate people to create a stronger sense of community. It’s good evidence that Pride still has its place, as well as an interesting look at a trio of fascinating people.

Zachary Fuhrer produced the films in partnership with workspace provider, WeWork, with Brenna Perez directing.

Perez comments, “All three of them are incredible individuals, with unique stories to tell that speak to the kinds of experiences millions of people have around the world. I think it’s important for us to hear their stories.”

Take a look at two of the three shorts below. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Amigas With Benefits – Love doesn’t run smooth for two older Latinx women

July 24, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This sweet short takes on a subject that’s not seen that often – not just queer people aging, but what happens when they’re in a retirement home, and one has dementia. What happens if two gay people fall in love at that point, when one of them is no longer judged to be allowed to be in charge of their own life?

Amigas with Benefits, ‘is a short dramedy about an elderly bride-to-be, Lupita. She is finally living her truth and is on the verge of marrying her love, Ramona. But on their special day, an uninvited guest, rudely disrupts the ceremony. It takes moral courage and a far-fetched plan for the couple to find a way back to their freedom to be happy.’

It’s a smart and charming film, that has some important and well thought out points to make about aging, homophobia and the fact that love can arrive at any stage of life.

The short was released online as part of PBS’ Online Film Festivals, and is currently open for votes, alongside the other contenders, on the PBS website. Take a look at Amigas With Benefits below.

Indoor Boys: Episode 1 – Should two gay friends have sex in the new web series?

July 17, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Many gay men have slept with one of their friends, and either enjoyed or regretted it. However, how do you broach the subject, and if you do, where on the spectrum between friends and lovers do you stand?

That’s what two gay guys are dealing with in the first episode of the new web series, Indoor Boys. As the name suggests, the series is set entirely in and around the young men’s house, with Episode 1 showing how the cocky Luke (Wesley Taylor) and more insecure Nate (Alex Wyse) may be interested in sleeping with one another – but there are some millennial issues to deal with.

New episode of the show will debut on HuffPost Queer Voices each Sunday. Take a look at the first, fun instalment of the show below. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: Flower – An art-porn look at sex & intimacy between five guys

July 12, 2017 By Tim Isaac 3 Comments

The idea of ‘art porn’ has been around for quite a few years now, but it’s only relatively recently that the ‘porn’ part of it been taken seriously (previously it was just movies with very explicit scene, which often were actually rather sex-negative). It’s something a few gay porn studios have taken note of.

That includes Helix Studios, who’ve teamed up with queer filmmaker Matt Lambert for Flower. While Lambert is known for his unusual, visionary films, this is by far his most explicit work yet. He tells Out that he nearly decided to remove his name from the movie to protect his more commercial work, “It was definitely something I never thought I’d make a year ago, that’s for damn sure. I realized that if [the film] is about celebrating sex positivity and dismantling the shame that surrounds gay sex, why the fuck would I negate that by shaming myself by being afraid to stand for the work?”

The film itself takes what is in many ways a porn staple – five young guys having sex – and infuses it with a sense of intimacy, sweetness and honesty. It intercuts the men having a bit of a sex-fuelled party with a sun-dappled and far more sensual erotic session the next morning. Then things take an unexpected turn when the men start lip-syncing to Pansy Division’s 90s tune, Flower. That includes using an erect penis as a microphone (something John Cameron Mitchell previously did in Shortbus). It certainly adds an unusual but rather fun, punk edge to the end of the film.

Lambert also feels that adding a sense of connection and humanity to porn is important, saying,“People, especially now more than ever, learn about their sexuality through porn. If all you have is the trash that’s out there, then you’re just going to start fucking like a porn star and you’re going to learn how to demean people and dehumanize people and have impersonal, non-intimate sexual experiences.”

Although the movie is far too NSFW to post here, it’s currently available to watch for free over at Helix studios, and you can watch it by CLICKING HERE. You can also watch a trailer below, and read more about the movie over at Out.

Gay Short Film Showcase: Young, Gay & Illegal – A 65-year age difference in a chat between two gay men

July 9, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

This isn’t the typical sort of gay film we post on BGPS, as it’s just a real-life chat between two British men. However, while both of them are gay, one is 13, while the other is 78. They unsurprisingly have very different life experiences, not least that for the older Percy, for the first 28 years of his life sex between men was completely illegal (the video helps mark 50 years since the partial decriminalisation of gay male sex in England and Wales).

As Percy notes, “You always had a slight suspicion that something could go wrong so you were never 100% at ease.”

For Louis it’s a window into a gay experience vastly different from the one he’s grown up in. He says, “It amazes me how they could even just say for loving someone, you could be arrested. That completely shocks me.”

Take a look at the video, made by Trent & Luke, below, which gives a wonderful window into the changes that have happened for gay people in the last few decades, as well as the things that still bind us across the generations. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. Gay Short Film Showcase: Generous – Sometimes hookups don’t look like they do on Grindr

July 6, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Generous - gay short film stillWe’ve all heard stories about – or experienced ourselves – people hooking up on Grindr, only to discover that the person they’re meeting doesn’t look anything like they did online. Either they used really old images, their pics were deceptively framed or they’re a completely different person.

Usually in these stories it’s the person who lied who’s made out to be the bad guy, but in Generous they focus on the other side – why someone might play with the truth on a hookup app. It takes a look at aging, preconceptions and loneliness, as a young man turns up at somebody’s apartment only to discover the guy he’s supposed to be hooking up with is significantly older than his pics.

Ultimately it asks who the bad guy is here (or perhaps they’re both as bad and good as the other). It also questions whether there are other issues surrounding online hookups that are perhaps more important. Ultimately though, Generous is a film more about the questions than the answers.

Take a look at Generous below (which incidentally was shot on an iPhone 6s). If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here. [Read more…]

Gay Short Film Showcase: War Within – A Muslim man tries to reconcile his faith & sexuality

July 5, 2017 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

We’ve featured all sorts of short films on BGPS, but not that many have been released in support of a direct campaign calling for some direct action. However, War Within has hit the web in the hope of increasing support for a push to grant five Mr. Gay Syria contestants asylum.

The Change.org petition states, ‘Five Syrian refugees escaped the horrors of life as gay men in Syria only to find that their nightmares never ended. After years of living in hiding, fearing for their lives, and watching fellow LGBTQ+ people being mercilessly executed by ISIS, these men believed they had found freedom and safety in Istanbul. Feeling liberated and grateful for their newfound, yet conditional freedom of authentic self-expression, they decided to hold a Mr. Gay Syria contest and planned for the winner to participate in The Mr. Gay World competition. However, hate and homophobia still remain in Turkey.

‘Created by Mahmoud Hassino to illuminate the urgent challenges experienced by LGBTQ+ people in the Middle East, Mr. Gay Syria is a regional competition to advance to Mr. Gay World and also a documentary, written and directed by Ayşe Toprak, poised to hit film festival circuits this summer season. The documentary highlights the relatable challenges of the five Mr. Gay Syria contestants: cultivating shared connection with like-minded people and depicting the not-so-relatable challenges of severe persecution and seemingly impossible barriers to being one’s authentic self while living in antiquated and judgmental environments.’

The hope is to help accelerate the asylum process for these men.

War Within itself depicts the conflicts going on inside a Muslim man who is trying to reconcile his sexuality with his faith, and how the traditions of his culture have pulled against him (and his family ties) since he was young. It’s a moody and sometimes sad piece, but well worth a look.

Take a look at War Withing below. If you know a short film we ought to be posting, tell us by getting in touch via our contact page. And check out more gay short films and web series here.

And head here to sign the Change.org petition. [Read more…]
