Director Rob Reiner (When Harry Met Sally, Stand By Me) may have had the piss taken out of him for his activist ways on South Park (where he was painted as a bit of an anti-smoking fascist), he’s always been a good friend of the gay cause. Now THR reports that he’s planning to make a movie about the fight for marriage equality.
The film has a personal connection for him, as he says it “Is based a little bit on the court challenge to Proposition 8, which I have been involved in.” In case you don’t know, Prop 8 is a ballot measure that was voted for in California and banned gay marriage. Since then it’s been caught up in court action, with the governor refusing to defend it in court and judges deciding whether banning same-sex marriage is constitutional.
As the cases mainly involve complex legal arguments (seemingly about who is allowed to defend the ban, if the State itself won’t) and they’re not yet completed, it’s difficult to know quite how the movie will work, but good luck to him!
