RoboCop (2014) (DVD Review)

June 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Joel Kinnaman, Gary Oldman, Michael Keaton, Abbie Cornish, Jackie Earle Haley
Director: Jose Padilha
Running Time: 117 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: June 9th 2014 (UK)

Unlike some movies, there was no real reason not to remake Robocop. Paul Verhoeven’s 1987 original is a great movie, but it leaves plenty of room for reinvention in the 21st Century. Indeed it’s probably why when MGM started digging around in their back catalogue for film to do-over, RoboCop was near the top of the list.

Although it took several years to actually get it done, the results are now here with Jose Padilha (Elite Squad) directing and Joel Kinnaman in the title role. [Read more…]

Listen To Neil Patrick Harris Singing Two Songs From Hedwig And The Angry Inch

June 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hedwig-neil-patrick-harrisTaking Hedwig And The Angry Inch to Broadway has been a big success, with large audiences heading to watch Neil Patrick Harris take on the transgender rocker, and many think the show will also do extremely well at tonight’s Tony Awards.

Hedwig has received Tony nominations for Best Musical Revival, Best Actor (Neil Patrick Harris), Best Featured Actress (Lena Hall), Best Director (Michael Mayer), Best Scenic Design (Julian Crouch), Best Costumes (Arianne Phillips), Best Lighting (Kevin Adams), and Best Sound Design (Tim O’Heir), so it’s certainly got a great shot at winning.

Ahead of the gong show we’ve got our first chance to listen to a couple of the songs from The Original Broadway Cast Recording of Hedwig and the Angry Inch, which is released digitally in the US on July 1st and in stores July 15th.

The songs we get are Wig in a Box and Sugar Daddy, which you can listen to below. It’s certainly not the same as getting to see the show on Broadway, but it may be the best those of us who won’t be able to get tickets will get.

Have a listen below. [Read more…]

Mi Amigo Jaime Gay Short Film – The difficulty of telling your crush how you feel

June 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

mi-amigo-jaime-short-filmMost gay people will know the feeling of falling for someone, but not knowing whether they feel the same way – or ever whether they prefer the same genitals as you do.

That’s the central problem faced by the main character in Mi Amigo Jaime. Dani is a teenager who’s in love with one of his friends, Jaime, but he has no idea how his mate will feel about it.

Unfortunately the initial revelation doesn’t work out that well, but will there be a happy ending?

You can take a look at Spanish filmmaker Alejandro Beltrán’s gay-themed short film below. And it doesn’t hurt that the guys in it are pretty cute too.

It’s also nice that whereas a few years ago this sort of teen short would have assumed the main character would be closeted and pained about it, Mi Amigo Jaime suggests that nowadays that’s not always the case, even if gay teen life isn’t suddenly problem free. [Read more…]

420 Gay Short Film – Things get erotic when two ‘homostoner’ guys get high

June 8, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

420-short-filmDoes marijuana make things life better? Having known a few people who’ve overdone it over the years, I’d say that if you not careful about moderation it causes more trouble than it’s worth. But there’s no doubt a lot of people like it, and that includes a lot of gay people.

The short film 420, by director Jacob Brown, is essentially an introduction to New York boyfriends Carlos Santolalla and John Tuite and their ‘homostoner’ lifestyle. “It’s about how weed can act as an aphrodisiac,” Santolalla explains. “A fantasy about when ‘lemme hit that’ becomes ‘lemme hit that.’”

The short also shows those who didn’t know that you can smoke pot through an apple!

It certainly seems to suggest that pot can add to the sexual experience, although the final shot hints that perhaps the reality isn’t quite as sexy as the fantasy.

You can also follow the couple at the Instagram, @jarlos420. [Read more…]

Channing Tatum Shows Support For Jonah Hill After Gay Slur Incident

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

channing-tatum-jonah-hillJonah Hill had to go on a bit of an apology tour earlier this week after TMZ got hold of footage of him yelling, “Suck my dick, you faggot,” at a photographer. He was keen to stress that, “I’m happy to take the heat for using this disgusting word. What I won’t allow is for anyone—it would break my heart to think that anyone—especially with all the work that I’ve done and all the loved ones that I have—[would think] I would be against anyone for their sexuality.”

It was particularly bad timing for Hill, whose sequel 22 Jump Street hit UK cinemas this week and will be released in the US on Friday.

It was inevitable that at some point his co-star, Channing Tatum – himself known for his support of gay rights – would be asked about the controversy. Tatum decided to speak up during a join interview with Hill for the US show, Extra.

Jonah apologised again, saying, “It’s just about owning up to when you mess up in life, and hopefully some people can learn from mistakes that I’ve made in my life and that’s it.”

Tatum then jumped in, adding, “I’ll jump in and just say that I think most of the time when people have to go on and sort of apologize for something it might not come off all that well because it’s not actually like what they mean. I can honestly say that is not who he is. It came off well and he did it well because he really means it, that wasn’t who he was that day.”

Although many people seem prepared to forgive Hill for his indiscretion, many others feel that despite his series of apologies, he shouldn’t be let off the hook for using the gay slur in such an offensive manner. The detractors point out that if he’d used a racial slur, he’d almost certainly have faced much greater condemnation.

Take a look at the clip of Tatum supporting Jonah below.

Gay Fave Andrew Hayden-Smith Amongst The Cast Of Russell T. Davies’ LGBT Series Banana

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Andrew-Hayden-Smith2This time last month the cast for Russell T. Davies’ gay-themed drama series Cucumber was announced. Now we get new about its sister show, Bananas, which will air on the UK TV channel E4. The one thing we’re now waiting for is news on  the third part of this interlinked triptych, Tofu, which will be air online.

The youthful cast includes Andrew Hayden-Smith, the openly gay actor who went from Byker Grove and presenting kid’s TV to finding a whole new audience as a recurring character on Doctor Who. Of course Smith was on Doctor Who when Russell T. Davies was running the show, so he must have impressed the Queer As Folk creator to get hired here.

Here’s the official announcement about the show: ‘Exciting and emerging talent from the fields of acting, writing and directing are to lead the charge in multi-award winning Russell T Davies’ much anticipated new E4 series, Banana, produced by RED Production Company.

‘Banana (8 x 30’) starts filming in Manchester next week, following hot on the heels of Cucumber, its partner drama for Channel 4.

‘A series of eight witty, charming and unique stand-alone stories, Banana covers 50 shades of gay and beyond – offering an intriguing and often outrageous peek into the individual lives, loves and losses of a range of characters. Young lesbian, Scotty pursues an unrequited love; 19 year old Dean has mysterious family secrets and a sexually charged liaison with the enigmatic Geordie Man; Sian struggles to choose between lover Violet and her over-protective mum Vanessa; and Helen who’s besieged by unwanted attention from an ex.

‘The series features exciting, up and coming talent including HANNAH JOHN-KAMEN (Happy Valley), LETITIA WRIGHT (Top Boy), GEORGIA HENSHAW (Waterloo Road), ANDREW HAYDEN-SMITH (Doctor Who) and comedian BETHANY BLACK in her television debut. They are joined by Cucumber regulars FREDDIE FOX (Parade’s End) and FISAYO AKINADE (Fresh Meat).

‘Alongside showrunner Davies who has written three episodes, Banana will feature the writing talents of comedian and presenter of The Great British Bake Off SUE PERKINS, MATTHEW BARRY and brilliant new writers CHARLIE COVELL and LEE WARBURTON

‘The series will be crafted by exciting new directors LEWIS ARNOLD (Misfits), LUKE SNELLIN (My Mad Fat Diary) and AL MACKAY (My Jihad) who are already gaining a profile in the industry.

‘“The joy of Banana is in the beautiful, charming, witty and sometimes heart breaking stories of a wide variety of characters, be they gay, lesbian, transgender or anything in-between,” explains Davies.  “The fact we have a bunch of brilliant and wildly talented young people in it, and making it, will give it even more bite and an exciting edge.”

‘Banana, Cucumber and Tofu, are three interlinked shows that explore 21st century gay life in all it’s powerful, witty, dark and uplifting guises and were devised by multi-award-winning showrunner Russell T Davies (Queer As Folk, Doctor Who) for E4, Channel 4 and online.

‘The ambitious projects are created with the same ferocious wit, startling honesty and heartfelt warmth that made Queer as Folk a landmark Channel 4 series, Banana will be broadcast on E4.

‘Online Tofu will be an anarchic and entertaining factual series about sex – from gay to straight, and anything in between – inspired by the dramas each week.’

The Best Of Me Trailer – James Marsden gets a Nicholas Sparks adaptation

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Paul Walker was due to join the likes of Zac Efron, Ryan Gosling, Channing Tatum and Josh Duhamel as the male star of a Nicholas Sparks adaptation. However his death sadly prevented that. Instead he was replaced by the James Marsden and we get our first taste of how well he’s done with it thanks to this trailer.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘Based on the bestselling novel by acclaimed author Nicholas Sparks, The Best of Me tells the story of Dawson (Marsden) and Amanda (Michelle Monaghan), two former high school sweethearts who find themselves reunited after 20 years apart, when they return to their small town for the funeral of a beloved friend. Their bittersweet reunion reignites the love they’ve never forgotten, but soon they discover the forces that drove them apart twenty years ago live on, posing even more serious threats today. Spanning decades, this epic love story captures the enduring power of our first true love, and the wrenching choices we face when confronted with elusive second chances.’

It’s not Marsden’s first trip to Sparks-town, as he also had a bit part in The Notebook, but here he gets to take centre stage. The Best of Me is due this autumn. [Read more…]

Peyton Reed Announced To Direct Marvel’s Ant Man

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

peyton-reedAfter Edgar Wright’s departure and Adam McKay saying he couldn’t do it, Marvel has been scrambling to find a replacement director for Ant Man. As they want to keep their Summer 2015 release date, there’s only a short list of directors with the right experience and who might be free.

Now it seems they’ve found one they think can do the job – Peyton Reed. He has plenty of experience with comedy, having helmed the likes of Bring It On, The Break-up and Yes Man. However he hasn’t really done much on the major tentpole action or, special effects front, so this will be something rather different for him.

He’s not a name that’s likely to get that many people excited (and indeed some will undoubtedly say he’s been brought in more by necessity than that he’s truly the right man for the job), but he’s a decent director and if he’s got the right people around him to help with the more technical FX side, there’s no reason to say he can’t make a success of it.

Along with the news of who will direct came a bit more of a plot synopsis, which says, ‘When Marvel’s “Ant-Man” hits theaters July 17, 2015, director Peyton Reed will help shepherd the hero into the Marvel Cinematic Universe with a cast led by Paul Rudd and Michael Douglas, with writer Adam McKay contributing to the film’s script.

‘Armed with the astonishing ability to shrink in scale but increase in strength, con-man Scott Lang (Rudd) must embrace his inner-hero and help his mentor, Dr. Hank Pym (Douglas), protect the secret behind his spectacular Ant-Man suit from a new generation of towering threats. Against seemingly insurmountable obstacles, Pym and Lang must plan and pull off a heist that will save the world.’

It’s interesting news that while McKay won’t direct, he will put the final touches on the script, especially as it was the changes new writers had added to Edgar Wright and Joe Cornish’s script that resulted in Wright walking. Hopefully when the film’s released Edgar will let us know how close it is to what he was planning.

It also means that Reed will have to push back his work on The Fifth Beatle, about the legendary music group’s gay manager, Brian Epstein.

Will Tom Hardy Or Benedict Cumberbatch Be Marvel’s Doctor Strange?

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac 1 Comment

tom-hardyWith the news a couple of days ago that Scott Derrickson will direct Marvel’s comic book movie Doctor Strange, it was inevitable that rumours and speculation would emerge about who would play the character.

Now we’ve got two names to mull over, as Deadline reports that Marvel is apparently considering Tom Hardy and Benedict Cumberbatch for the title role. Earlier this week it was suggested that Oscar winner Jared Leto may also be up for the part.

Doctor Strange was mentioned in Captain America: The Winter Soldier and it’s known Marvel has been developing a stand-alone film for the character for some time. However while a director has been announced, at the moment we don’t know exactly when it will be released.

2016 is the presumption at this point, which would mean Marvel will probably be hoping to fill the title role fairly soon. However at this stage its not known if there have been any talks at all with Cumberbatch, Hardy or Leto’s people, or whether at the moment the actors are merely on a wishlist.

New Pics Of Benedict Cumberbatch As Gay Codebreaker Alan Turing In The Imitation Game

June 7, 2014 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

imitation-game-pic2Back in December the first image of Benedict Cumberbatch in The Imitation Game was released. Now EW has brought us a couple more, as well at the actor’s brief thoughts on playing the character.

Turing is a pioneer of modern-day computing who is credited with helping crack the fiendish German codes, such as Enigma, during the Second World War. As Cumberbatch says, “He’s an exceptional man. I hope this film does justice to this unsung hero.”

The film chronicles the nail-biting race against time by Turing and his brilliant team at Britain’s top-secret code-breaking centre, Bletchley Park. Turing, whose contributions and genius significantly shortened the war, saving thousands of lives, was the eventual victim of an unenlightened British Establishment.

Tragically in the 1950s Turing admitted to the police he was gay while reporting a robbery, believing they would protect him and catch those who’d stolen from him. Instead it was him who found himself in court. After he was convicted he was shunned by the establishment and despite his incredible mind he found himself pushed to the sidelines. He committed suicide (although some say it was an accident) not too long afterwards.

Cumberbatch stars alongside Keira Knightley, Matthew Goode, Mark Strong, Rory Kinnear, Charles Dance, Allen Leech and Matthew Beard. The film currently has an Oscar-bait November release date set.
