Vin Diesel Is A Fugitive Once More In A New Riddick Poster

July 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

riddick-poster1Ahead of Riddick’s panel at Comic Con in a couple of weeks time, a new poster for Riddick has dropped, with Vin Diesel perched on a rock, presumably being all badass (after all, what else would Diesel be doing?).

Here’s the plot synopsis: ‘In the film, the infamous Riddick has been left for dead on a sun-scorched planet that appears to be lifeless. Soon, however, he finds himself fighting for survival against alien predators more lethal than any human he’s encountered. The only way off is for Riddick to activate an emergency beacon and alert mercenaries who rapidly descend to the planet in search of their bounty.

‘The first ship to arrive carries a new breed of merc, more lethal and violent, while the second is captained by a man whose pursuit of Riddick is more personal. With time running out and a storm on the horizon that no one could survive, his hunters won’t leave the planet without Riddick’s head as their trophy.’

It should hit cinemas this autumn.

Kevin Costner On For High School Sports Movie McFarland

July 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

kevin-costnerIf you stripped out westerns and sports related movies, Kevin Costner would have only made about three films. He’s a man who knows what he likes, and having just finished shooting the American Football flick Draft Day, he’s now signed up for McFarland, where he’ll play a high school track coach, according to Variety.

Based on a true story, ‘Costner will play a coach living in a predominantly Hispanic California town who creates a high school track team that must overcome social and physical hurdles to become champions during the 1980s.’

Costner has been mulling over the movie for a long time, as he first entered talks to join the movie almost a year ago, but it’s only now that he’s officially signed on.

Niki Caro (Whale Rider, North Country) is set to direct, with Disney backing the movie.

Christian Bale Confirms The End Of His Batman Days

July 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

dark-knight-rises-bd-cover-slide
While it seemed that The Dark Knight Rises marked the end of Christian Bale as Batman, many having been holding onto the slim hope that he’d have a change of heart and return for Justice League.

However Bale confirmed to EW that he is not returning to play Batman. When asked about his possible involvement in Justice League, the actor revealed that he hasn’t been approached to even consider joining Justice League.

He says, “We were incredibly fortunate to get to make three [Batman films]. That’s enough. Let’s not get greedy. Chris (Nolan) always said he wanted to make it one film at a time. And we ended up sitting there looking at each other, saying ‘We’re about to make the third.’ We never really knew if we were going to get to be there, but if that was how it was going to be, this was where it should end as well. I have no information, no knowledge about anything. I’ve literally not had a conversation with a living soul. I understand that they may be making a Justice League movie, that’s it. It’s a torch that should be handed from one actor to another. So I enjoy looking forward to what somebody else will come up with.”

Back in March, there was a speculative rumour that Christopher Nolan was developing Justice League with Christian Bale returning as Batman. That story turned out to be false, with Warner Bros. executive Jeffrey Robinov revealing in April that the director’s Batman trilogy stands on its own.

At the moment it seems Man of Steel director Zack Snyder is going to helm Justice League, but that has not been confirmed.

Nicolas Cage Joins Bad Santa Director Terry Zwigoff’s Lost Melody

July 2, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Nicholas-CageNormally Nicolas Cage is signing up for film left, right and centre, but it’s been a few months since we last heard about a new film the actor was planning to make. However now Cage is in talks to star in Lost Melody for director Terry Zwigoff, according to TheWrap.

The film is about a man who’s stuck in a marriage with a shrewish woman. Then his life is upended when he falls in love with a prostitute. The man’s wife and the prostitute have not yet been cast.

Terry Zwigoff, who’s best known for Bad Santa and Ghost World, is directing from a screenplay he co-wrote with Melissa Axlerod.

Producer Edward R. Pressman commented, “When considering a project, I think it most important that the director and the film live in the same universe and Terry certainly achieves this with Lost Melody. I’ve always wanted to work with Terry and am excited to be teaming on a wonderful darkly-funny drama in the tradition of such classics as The Blue Angel and Sunset Boulevard.”

It isn’t known when the film might shoot.

A Great Big World Has Fun With ‘Everyone Is Gay’, The ‘Gayest Song Ever’

July 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Everyone likes a song, don’t they? And the gayer the better! Well, A Great Big World were challenged by Kristin and Dannielle (who run a website called EveryoneIsGay.com that offers advice to LGBTQ youth) to write the “gayest song ever” for a compilation.

They’ve come up with ‘Everyone Is Gay’, a fun and catchy little ditty that certainly make everything homosexual sound pretty cool.

A Great Big World says of the EveryoneIsGay site, ‘We believe in their mission and stand by all those who live in fear of being their authentic selves. NO ONE deserves to be bullied or treated unfairly based on sexual preference. Diversity should be celebrated!’ [Read more…]

Gay Porn Studio CockyBoys Gets A Little More Highbrow With QFest Film Festival Screening

July 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

max-and-jakes-roadstrip-posterPorn has undergone a lot of changes in the face of the internet. Porn movies with plots (or at least attempts at plots) have become less common, replaced by sites offering lots of individual sex scenes or artificially joining several of those together and calling it a movie.

However gay porn studio CockyBoys has been fighting back against that, and has been trying to see if in the crowded world of porn, there’s room for filmmaking that tries something a little different.

As well as releasing quite a lot of interestingly filmed sex scenes, the site has produced feature length projects such as Project Go-Go Boy, The Haunting and, most recently, Roadstrip, which received rave reviews on its release. Indeed the film’s director (and CockyBoys co-owner), Jake Jaxson, believes the movie is good enough in its own right that he’s stripping out most of the hardcore and cutting a special 82-minute version to show at this year’s Qfest gay film festival in Philadelphia. It’ll screen on July 20th at 9:30pm at Ritz East Theater 2.

Whether the movie is a worthwhile piece of queer filmmaking and not just ‘porn’ is yet to be seen, and the screening certainly has a whiff of promoting CockyBoys’ ideas about offering a slightly different kind of porn. In fact, we wouldn’t be surprised if many of the people going to the screening are going to be as interested in meeting some of the real CockyBoys as they are in the film.

Jaxson will be at the premiere event alongside models/actors Max Ryder, Jake Bass, Levi Karter and Ricky Roman, who will participate in a panel moderated by Paper Magazine‘s Mickey Boardman. There’ll also be a special CockyBoys event at the Voyeur Nightclub after the screening.

Qfest certainly seems to think it’s a film worth screening at a proper gay film festival, as the official description says that it ‘creatively fuses gay pornography along with experimental art, cinema verite and raunchy reality, and ha[s] fashioned one of the season’s most visually arresting and exciting (s)experiences’.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘RoadStrip follows CockyBoys models Max Ryder and Jake Bass as they travel across this great land of ours from New York to Palm Springs in a rented RV. We soon see what happens when cameras are on them 24/7 and the line between reality and fantasy becomes increasingly blurred. It also heralds an entirely new genre in gay filmmaking. Having just launched their careers, the two adorable young ‘uns had barely shaken the eggshells from their tender shoulders when their prior film Project Gogo Boy took the gay adult world by storm, racking up a mountain of awards and instantly catapulting both models and studio to the forefront of the industry.’

Beijing Queer Film Festival Pulled Off Without Government Intervention For The First Time

July 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

beijing-queer-film-festivalThe Beijing Queer Film Festival has had a troubled history, but the sixth festival has reportedly gone off smoothly for the first time in its history, with 28 films from five countries shown.

As reported by Gay Star News, the ‘first festival in 2001 was shut down by government officials, the second edition was forced to move from Peking University to the 798 art district and the authorities forced organizers to cancel the fifth festival in 2011.’

However this time they put in place ways to prevent government intervention, such as only announcing venues at the last minute, as well as using places such as the French and Dutch Embassies and the American Center, which the Chinese authorities have less control over. There was also little publicity, with events billed as separate film screenings rather than a festival.

Indeed, it wasn’t until after the festival had ended that it was officially revealed that there had been a festival at all! It ran from June 19th to 23rd.

‘Through word-of-mouth, the festival gathered a full house at nearly all of its screenings, and only the occasional attendee was surprised to notice that the Beijing Queer Film Festival was behind the different queer film activities,’ said a statement from the festival organisers.

As well as the screenings, a scholarship program, started in 2011, awarded funding for 25 people from less-developed parts of China to attend. ‘They gladly embraced the opportunity to watch and discuss queer-themed films, an unknown luxury in their respective hometowns,’ said the organisers.

At the end of the event, the chairs for the next Festival in 2015 were announced as Queer Comrades Wei Xiaogang and Stijn Deklerck.

‘A lot can change within two years,’ said Wei. ‘The only thing that’s certain is that we need to continue to fight to obtain greater freedom of expression.’

While homosexuality is becoming more accepted in China, it still faces a lot of challenges and oppression. While gay conduct isn’t illegal in the country, the authorities still view it as suspicion, especially when gay people want to gather, as they fear it could lead to organised dissent.

The Guilt Trip (DVD)

July 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

Starring: Barbra Streisand, Seth Rogen, Kathy Najimy, Miriam Margolyes
Director: Anne Fletcher
Running Time: 95 mins
Certificate: 12
Release Date: July 1st 2013

Barbra Streisand hasn’t taken a lead role in a movie since The Mirror Has Two Faces in 1996, so there was a fair amount of anticipation for The Guilt Trip. Unfortunately though, she should probably have spent a bit more time picking through scripts, as this certainly isn’t a triumphant return.

Seth Rogen plays Andy Brewster, an inventor who’s come up with a revolutionary cleaning product. He’s on a trip around the country trying to sell it to retailers, but nobody seems that interested, largely because his pitch is dreadful. He stops off to see his mom, Joyce (Streisand), and after she tells him a story about her first love, he decides to invite her along on the trip with the idea of secretly reuniting her with that old boyfriend. First Clip From Lars von Trier’s Nymphomaniac Released

July 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

There’s a lot of interest in Lars Von Trier’s Nymphomaniac, which he’s said will be full of sex and be released in both hardcore and softcore versions. While that in itself might not be that surprising, the fact he’s drawn together a fairly well known cast to help him is unusual (although it has been suggested that CG may be used so the bodies you see having sex may not really be attached to the well known heads).

The likes of Charlotte Gainsbourg, Stellan Skarsgard, Shia LaBeouf, Jamie Bell, Christian Slater, Willem Dafoe, Uma Thurman, Connie Neilsen and Stacy Martin are set to star.

Now the first clip from the film has been released, and you won’t be surprised to hear there’s no hardcore shagging in it.

Here’s the synopsis: ‘The film is a wild and poetic story of a woman’s erotic journey from birth to the age of 50 as told by the main character, the self-diagnosed nymphomaniac, Joe (Gainsbourg). On a cold winter’s evening the old, charming bachelor, Seligman (Skarsgard), finds Joe beaten up in an alley. He brings her home to his flat where he cares for her wounds while asking her about her life. He listens intently as Joe over the next 8 chapters recounts the lushly branched-out and multi-faceted story of her life, rich in associations and interjecting incidents.’

No release date is currently set, but expect it later this year.

Guillermo Del Toro & Ron Perlman Float The Possibility Of Hellboy 3

July 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

hellboy-pic1Hellboy has been a bit of an unfortunate franchise, as while everyone who’s seen the two Guillermo Del Toro movies seems to have liked them, they didn’t make much money. Indeed, between the first and second movie it moved from Sony Pictures to Universal, as the former didn’t want to pay for a follow-up, having barely broken even on the first.

Since Hellboy II there’s been talk of a third film, but generally it’s been with more hope than with any sense it might actually happen. However now there’s a glimmer that it might actually happen, as Del Toro and star Ron Perlman have been talking about the possibility of Hellboy III.

Del Toro told ShockTilYouDrop, “I hate giving pieces away about it, but last night, we were at dinner and Ron said, ‘I would be happy to do Hellboy again, when are we doing Hellboy 3?’ Thomas [Tull, Legendary Pictures’ Founder and CEO] said, ‘I would love to see Hellboy 3.’ He didn’t say he would love to do it; he just said he’d like to see it, but today, I’ll ask him.”

It’s certainly more hopeful that when Del Toro last talked about the possibility of a franchise, when he said the idea was pretty much dead, partly because Ron Perlman had suggested he didn’t want to do it because of the heavy and uncomfortable prosthetics work involved.

However Perlman seems to have had a change of heart, saying, “I loved working for Legendary, and I know for Guillermo, working on Pacific Rim was one of his greatest experiences. The reason I loved working for them is because Guillermo was so happy. I came in six months into the shoot and he seemed as fresh as a daisy, simply because he was working for someone who appreciated and supported his outlandish visions of what he wanted to put on the screen. My immediate, silent wish was, wouldn’t it be great if these guys came in and helped resolve the Hellboy series.”

However can Legendary, the company behind the likes of Pacific Rim, Man Of Steel and the Dark Knight movies, actually get it off the ground? Legendary’s Tull later responded by saying, “There are rights issues that would need to be sorted out for Legendary to get involved.” It certainly sounds like he’s interested, even if he doesn’t want to say anything that sounds like a commitment.

Don’t get too excited yet, but it does appear the idea of Hellboy III is more likely than it has been for several years.

Rosemarie DeWitt Joins Jeremy Renner In Kill the Messenger

July 1, 2013 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

rosemarie-dewittRosemarie DeWitt has floated around the edges of stardom with the likes of Cinderella Man and The Watch. Now she may be stepping up a notch, as Deadline reports that she’s in talks to play the female lead in Kill the Messenger, alongside Jeremy Renner.

The movie is based on the true story of Gary Webb, a San Jose Mercury News reporter who helped expose the CIA’s involvement in a drug smuggling operation with Nicarauguan rebels in the 1980s. In an effort to discredit the writer, the agency launched a smear campaign before the journalist tragically his own life. Paz Vega is playing the girlfriend of a drug dealer, who seeks Gary’s help in getting him out of jail.

Unfortunately no details have been released about who DeWitt will play.

Michael Cuesta is directing from a screenplay by Peter Landesman, which is adapted from Gary Webb’s book Dark Alliance: The CIA, the Contras, and the Crack Cocaine Explosion, as well as Nick Schou’s Kill the Messenger: How the CIA’s Crack-Cocaine Controversy Destroyed Journalist Gary Webb. Filming will kick off in August.
