Lynne Ramsay may have only made three films in 12 years, but each one has been met with critical acclaim. Ratcatcher, Morvern Callar and We Need To Talk About Kevin were all very indie efforts, dealing with tough but very human subjects.
It appears though that she wants to try something a little different with her next movie, a sci-fi take on Moby Dick. She told Mark Kermode and Simon Mayo about it, saying “This is really the first time I’ve spoken about it; it’s been very under wraps. Moby Dick is a fantastic novel, an American classic, and I’m working on something loosely based on that. It’s science-fiction, so we’re taking the premise into the galaxy, creating a whole new world, and a new alien. It’s a very psychological piece, mainly taking place in the ship, a bit like Das Boot, so it’s quite claustrophobic.”
She’s wring about it being a fantastic novel, as Melville’s book must be one of the most tedious things ever written, although it does have a good basic story. It also sounds that while it is sci-fi, Ramsay is looking at something more intense and claustrophobic than your usual genre piece. There’s no info though on when she might make it – although we’ll have to hope it’s less time than the nine years between Morvern Callar and We Need To Talk About Kevin.
