In the last 25 years, Where’s Waldo? (which started life in Britain as Where’s Wally?) has become popular all over the world, and hence Hollywood has shown quite a lot of interest in it. However that hasn’t translated into an actual move. Now MGM is stepping in to whether they can get it done, according to Variety.
About two and a half years ago Universal and Illumination Entertainment (the guys behind Despicable Me) bought the rights and hoped to make an animated version, but that’s must have fallen by the wayside. MGM’s snapped up the rights and plans a live-action family adventure.
Since the book started out in the UK in 1987, they’ve sold more than 55 million copies worldwide, so there’s certainly a strong brand there. It’s also spread in the world of smartphone games, selling more than 4.6 million apps through Apple. Ultimately though, it’s difficult to she how the film going to anything other than a standard kids’ flick, probably involving someone being lost most of the time. We’ll have to wait and see.
