It’s difficult to know how much Chad Allen’s career was changed by people knowing he was gay, but beforehand it did seem he was on the road to big things. Allen is a former child actor who got his first TV credit at the age of four. That led to regular roles in the shows St. Elsewhere, Our House and My Two Dads, along with guest spots on everything from Star Trek: The Next Generation to The Wonder Years, making him one of the best known child stars around.

At the age of 19 his fame went through the roof when he was cast as Matthew Cooper in the series Dr Quinn Medicine Woman. During the run of that show he was forcibly outed when his boyfriend sold pictures of Chad kissing a man in a hot tub to a tabloid.

Despite having little choice in whether the public knew his private life, Allen has embraced it and become a prominent activist on gay issues. His acting career was undoubtedly altered though, as he found it tough to get work after Dr. Quinn ended. However he has continued to act, often taking gay roles such as private detective Donald Strachey in a series of TV movies.
