George Clooney has never been afraid to speak out and support causes he believes in, even if that hasn’t always made him popular with right wing fanatics, or indeed homophobes. He’s often spoken out for gay causes and has been a huge supporter of initiatives to get equal marriage recognised in the US.
Now he’s stepped forward once again, auctioning off a date (well, a lunch, anyway) to raise funds for the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN). That’s right, you can take you and a friend for a meal at LA’s Soho House restaurant, with Clooney and entertainment journalist Dave Karger, and support and excellent LGBT cause at the same time. However you’ll need plenty of cash, as the lunch is valued at $20,000, and already has bids up to $6,500. However if you have massive wads of cash burning holes in your pockets, the CharityBuzz auction remains open until October 11th, so there’s plenty of time to bid.
There are plenty of other lots to bid on, such as an audition for a role on the TV show American Horror Story, tickets to movie premieres (along with meet and greets with the stars), visits to the sets of Modern Family or NCIS: LA, and a walk-on role in True Blood.
If you’d like to know more about GLSEN, here’s their mission statement: ‘The Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network strives to assure that each member of every school community is valued and respected regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity/expression.
‘We believe that such an atmosphere engenders a positive sense of self, which is the basis of educational achievement and personal growth. Since homophobia and heterosexism undermine a healthy school climate, we work to educate teachers, students and the public at large about the damaging effects these forces have on youth and adults alike. We recognize that forces such as racism and sexism have similarly adverse impacts on communities and we support schools in seeking to redress all such inequities.
‘GLSEN seeks to develop school climates where difference is valued for the positive contribution it makes in creating a more vibrant and diverse community. We welcome any and all individuals as members, regardless of sexual orientation, gender identity/expression or occupation, who are committed to seeing this philosophy realized in K-12 schools.’
The auction is open until October 11th, so get bidding.
