Take A Look At John Cameron Mitchell’s ‘Superqueer’ Video For Sigur Ros

Icelandic musicians Sigur Ros have always been at the arty end of the spectrum, but rather than just being posers, they do genuinely interesting things. The latest is the Valtari Mystery Film project, where they band gave 12 filmmakers the same budget to come up with short films using music from Sigur Ros’ latest album, Valtari.

The project has already brought us Shia LaBeouf’s penis in the third of the shorts, and now the ninth has arrived, ‘Seraph’, which was directed by Hedwig & The Angry Inch creator John Cameron Mitchell and graphic artist Dash Shaw. There is more nudity, but it’s of the animated kind, as well as having a slightly queer bent.

Here’s what Mitchell had to say about it: “Eight years ago I met Jonsi, the queer singer of Sigur Rós, and took him to his first drag show (Suppositori Spelling in SF). Jonsi says it remains his ‘best drag show.’ This year he asked me and 12 other flmmakers to be part of their Valtari Mystery Film Project. We were allowed do whatever we wanted with the music from their new album–no parameters but the small budget. I chose to do a 6 min narrative short focussing on a character from Shell Game, an animated feature I’m producing with director Dash Shaw, an amazing graphic novelist who did comic book art for my film Rabbit Hole. Seraph is the superqueer result using two songs from the new album.”
