It’s all been a bit of a palaver over at Fox on Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes for the last couple of weeks, as the studio is keen to get the sequel in cinemas for summer 2014, but Rupert Wyatt, who helmed Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes, thought that wasn’t enough time and stepped away. That set off a bit of a rush to get a new director, as Fox is keen to keep the release in 2014.
As we reported last week, Matt Reeves was Fox’s first choice to take over, and now Deadline reports he’s been confirmed to direct the Apes movie. Reeves is best known for directing Let Me In and Cloverfield, and has experience of working quickly and dealing with complex special effects, which should ensure he can keep to Fox’s timeline.
Reeves beat out J Blakeson (The Disappearance of Alice Creed), Juan Carlos Fresnadillo (28 Weeks Later), Jeff Nichols (Take Shelter), and Juan Antonio Bayona (The Orphanage) for the job. There’s no news on the exact plot, although the movie will presumably continue the story of Caesar (we do know Andy Serkis will return) and the Apes’ rise to rule the planet.
