Breaking Dawn 2 Tops US Thanksgiving Box Office

November 26, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

It was slightly mixed fortunes at US cinemas over the Thanksgiving weekend, as while overall the box office set a record of $290 million for the five days from Thursday to Sunday, the biggest new entry, Dreamworks Animation’s Rise Of The Guardians, disappointed with a $32 million opening to place fourth on the chart.

It’s the worst start for a DWA movie since Flushed Away in 2006 and particularly disappointing as it was Thanksgiving. The studio will be hoping that as the film has a Christmassy theme, it can continue to attract audiences through December.

The top three spots on the chart remained the same, with Breaking Dawn Part 2 taking the top spot, earning $64.02 over the five days, which is the strongest hold for any of the Twilight movies. Skyfall was second with $51.1 million. Like Breaking Dawn, it passed the $200 million mark over the weekend, and perhaps surprisingly, it’s the first Bond movie to do so.

The other main new entry may not have made as much money as Rise Of The Guardians, but still managed to outpace expectations. The Life Of Pi grossed $30 million, which is great news for a film many thought might struggle to find an audience and would have to rely on award kudos to get people into cinemas.

The long-delayed remake of Red Dawn was the only other new release in the chart, making an okay but not spectacular $22 million over the five days.

Take a look below for the US box office top 10 for the weekend of November 23rd-25th November, 2012.
