I don’t think it would be too stereotyping to say the main audience for Smash is women and gay men (okay, that’s very stereotyping, but it’s also probably true). While the first season had its ups and downs and often seemed on the edge of collapsing in a sea of incredibly soapy relationship drama and so much backstabbing the entire cast should have been wading through pools of blood, it was still entertaining. That was largely thanks to a strong cast, interesting central characters, plenty of great musical numbers and the fact the core of the story was very watchable.
US TV network NBC obviously realised there were a few problems with the show, as they’ve sacked the show’s creator and brought in someone else to run it for Season 2. There are also going to be a few changes to the cast, with many of the tedious male love interests given the boot, as well as a few of the female characters.
The musical series doesn’t arrive back on our screen until early next year, but NBC has decided to give us an extended sneak peak with the video above.
There’s plenty to look out for, the most notable of which is the appearance of Oscar-winner Jennifer Hudson, who it certainly appears will be given plenty of opportunity to show off her patented brand of emotive wailing. There’s also a new love interest for Karen in the form of Joyful Noise’s Jeremy Jordan. However it’s not all change as there’s still plenty of behind-the-scenes musical drama, and it certainly doesn’t look like Karen and Ivy have suddenly become bosom buds.
Smash returns to US screens on February 5th, and should be back on Sky Atlantic in the UK around the same time.
