What’s The Gay Interest Amongst The Golden Globe Nominations?

December 13, 2012 By Tim Isaac Leave a Comment

lincoln-poster12012 may not be finished yet, but with the Oscars moving earlier in the year, to February 24th, those ceremonies that want to keep ahead of the Academy have had to move their schedules forward.

That’s true of the Golden Globes, which are often seen as the most important awards in the run up to the Oscars. That’s in part because the noms arrive just as Oscar voters are deciding who they should nominate, while the awards are handed out around the time the Academy decides who the actual winners of their big prizes will be.

So while it might seem early, the Golden Globe nominations have now been released. Lincoln leads the way with seven nominations, while Argo and Django both scored five nominations apiece. However perhaps the big surprise is that there’s only three noms for Zero Dark Thirty, which in the past few days has emerged as the one to beat at the Oscars.

There’s not a huge amount of gay interest amongst the nominations, although Best Exotic Marigold Hotel, which includes an LGBT side-story, is up for Best Film (Musical Or Comedy). Jack Black scored a Best Actor nom for his gay turn in Bernie. Nicole Kidman is nominated for The Paperboy, marking the only nod for gay director Lee Daniels’ The Paperboy. Gay writer Tony Kushner is in the Screenplay category for Lincoln

On the TV side, out actor Jim Parsons is nominated as best comedy/musical actor, while Archie Panajbi is included on the list for Best Supporting TV actress for her bisexual character in The Good Wife. There are also noms in the Best TV Series Musical Or Comedy for the very gay friendly Smash and Modern Family, while Eric Stonestreet gets another Modern Family nomination for play the gay Cam.

Meryl Streep scores her billionth (well, her 27th) Golden Globe nomination for Hope Springs (seriously, the woman can sneeze and the Hollywood Foreign Press Association will nominate it).

British actresses have done well, scoring half the nominations in the Best Actress film categories (Drama and Comedy Or Musical) with Helen Mirren, Rachel Weisz, Emily Blunt, Judi Dench and Maggie Smith (who’s also nominated in the TV section for Downton Abbey) all nominated. Technically we could include Naomi Watts too, as she was born in the UK.

Take a look at the full list of nominees below (the Golden Globes will be handed out at a ceremony on January 13th):
